First Impressions
The Dyno-Thane Pure Energy shows up in a striking color combination of red and purple. Inside this bowling ball works the symmetrical POP core, which stands for Polar Opposite Powerblocks. This core is characterized by a low RG of 2.49 and a high differential of 0.057. These dynamic numbers point to very high flare potential and an early rotational plane. The true unique selling point of the Pure Energy, however, is its coverstock. This is the Soaker ATC material, which has additionally been loaded with particles. The cover is rounded out by an extremely coarse, high-traction surface that comes with an 800-grit matte finish out of the box. Thanks to this heavily sanded texture and the added particles, the ball is designed to bite and find traction extremely early in the heads, even through the heaviest oil. Instead of skidding across the oil film, the core in combination with the particle-loaded surface forces the ball quickly into a stable roll phase. The Pure Energy should therefore generate a very strong and controllable hook, distinguished by massive traction through the front and middle third of the lane. On the whole, the technical specifications clearly indicate that this ball was built without compromise for maximum traction on extremely wet lane conditions, and is less focused on length or a late change of direction.
Comparison
If you compare the Dyno-Thane Pure Energy with established modern benchmark balls such as the Storm Phaze II, the different technological approaches become clear. The Storm Phaze II uses a solid reactive cover which also reads early, but shows a somewhat smoother reaction in the heads compared to the particle cover of the Pure Energy. With its 800-grit finish and the particles, the Pure Energy digs into the oil far more drastically and uncompromisingly, which gives it an advantage in terms of traction on extremely wet boards, but makes it noticeably more prone to premature energy loss on drying conditions. Another contrast can be drawn with the Hammer Black Widow 3.0. While the asymmetrical core of the Black Widow series is designed to store energy for a sharp and aggressive move at the breakpoint, the symmetrical Pure Energy uses up its energy far more evenly and earlier. It therefore offers a rounder, more predictable arc toward the pocket, whereas asymmetrical balls with polished or finer reactive surfaces react considerably more angularly. When the lane conditions carry extremely high oil volume and modern reactive balls tend to miss their breakpoint, the heavily sanded particle cover of the Pure Energy offers a reliable solution to force the hook early.
On the Lanes
Because of its specific construction, the Dyno-Thane Pure Energy is designed almost exclusively for high oil volumes and very fresh, demanding patterns. If you throw the ball at a rather high speed or have a lower rev rate, you'll benefit enormously from the strong surface, since it makes sure the ball doesn't slide uncontrollably past the breakpoint but instead builds up the necessary traction early to find the pocket reliably. As soon as the lane goes into the inevitable transition, though, and friction increases in the front part of the lane, the Pure Energy reaches its limits extremely quickly. The coarse particle surface then tends to dig into the drier boards too early. As a result, the ball uses up its rotational energy prematurely and delivers noticeably worse carry when it hits the pins, which often results in flat hits. For bowlers on dry to medium conditions, this ball is therefore not suitable. On freshly oiled and long patterns, however, the Pure Energy unfolds its full potential and offers massive stability, giving the bowler the confidence needed to play a consistent and controlled arc even in the toughest oil conditions.
