First Impressions
The Storm Proton PhysiX comes in an attractive magenta/black/violet design and stands out with its asymmetric Atomic core featuring strategically placed inlets. The specs are impressive: an extremely low 2.48 RG in 15 pounds combined with a high 0.053 differential as well as a 0.017 mass bias differential. The NeX Solid Reactive surface comes prepared at 2000 grit Abralon out of the box and represents Storm's earliest hooking cover.
Comparison
Side by side, the Proton PhysiX shows clear differences from its siblings in the PhysiX series. While the Storm PhysiX has one of the most distinct reactions and the Storm AstroPhysiX shines on broken-down lanes, the Proton is designed specifically for heavy oil conditions. One tester noted more hook and a stronger entry angle than the Storm Axiom on the same pattern. Compared to the Storm Axiom, it is practically a version with a stronger core on the same cover, so fans of the Axiom will appreciate the Proton as well. Compared to other strong balls such as the Storm UFO, Axiom, Incite and RST X-1, the Proton shows more motion, but less than the Storm Rubicon.
On the Lanes
The Proton PhysiX should provide traction and hook on practically any heavy oil condition. If you have a lower rev rate or higher ball speed, you'll benefit especially from the midlane traction, since the ball simply doesn't go past the breakpoint. Strokers benefit from the enormous traction and backend reaction on fresh heavy oil patterns, with the hook through the midlane creating a lot of overall motion. The ball is not recommended for rev-dominant players with lower speed or for players who mainly bowl on lighter oil volumes. Without heavy oil, the Proton belongs back in the bag, unless you are very speed-dominant. Tournament players and pros who face a variety of heavy oil conditions will appreciate this ball when they want to open up the lane and create some margin for error.
