First Impressions
The Storm Proton PhysiX 25th Anniversary comes in a striking Magenta/Black/Violet design and belongs to Storm's Premier Line. The ball uses the asymmetric Atomic Core, which has already proven successful in the PhysiX and AstroPhysiX models. The specs show a 2.48 RG on a 15-pound ball and a 0.053 differential, rounded out by a 0.017 intermediate differential. The key change is the NeX Solid cover, which was previously used on the Storm Axiom. This aggressive solid coverstock is finished at 2000 Abralon and should provide hook and traction for all player types.
Comparison
NeX (Nano Extreme) is Storm's earliest reading cover and hooked noticeably earlier than NRG on every pattern and every surface in testing. Durability testing showed that after 50 shots, NeX produced 11% more entry angle and 9.6% more total hook than a fresh NRG surface. Compared to the Storm Axiom with identical pin placement, the Proton is clearly more defined at the breakpoint and rolls heavier into the pins. Against the Storm PhysiX, the Proton offers more total hook and more angle at the breakpoint. The distinction from the other PhysiX models lies clearly in the intended use: while the PhysiX offers one of the most shapely reactions and the AstroPhysiX shines on broken-down patterns, until the Proton there was no PhysiX for heavy oil.
On the Lanes
The Proton PhysiX should deliver traction and hook on virtually any heavy oil condition imaginable. This ball is ideal if your game is speed-dominant and possibly without a very high rev rate, while rev-dominant players need plenty of oil for the Proton to work the way Storm intended. The combination of low RG and higher mass bias gives this core the ability to handle the heaviest oil patterns. This ball is great on conditions where the lanes are absolutely flooded with oil and you need something that can cut through the oil and create a line. With swings that are too big there is a risk of burning up with flat 10s — that's the sign to put the ball away, unless you can move deeper into the oil and preserve energy. The ball works for league bowlers as well as tournament bowlers who need a dependable reaction on heavy oil conditions.
