First Impressions
Released in May 2024, the Motiv Propel in the Red/Teal/Black color scheme presents itself as a specialized solution in the entry-level and "dry-lane" performance category. Visually, the ball impresses with a factory high-gloss finish (6000 grit Laser Scan Polished), which combines with the striking color scheme for a modern look on the lane. Technically, the Propel is based on a significant combination of the symmetrical Tyro™ core and the Foundation Urethane™ Pearl coverstock. This choice of material marks a decisive difference from conventional entry-level balls: instead of relying on pure polyester or aggressive reactive resin, Motiv uses a pearl urethane blend here. The technical numbers underline the focus on maximum control and length: with an extremely high RG of 2.75 (at 15 lbs) and a low differential of 0.028, the core was built to delay rotation for a long time and minimize flare potential. This points to a ball reaction designed to travel through the heads extremely cleanly and to initiate a gentle change of direction only very late.
Comparison
Compared directly within the Motiv lineup, the Propel sits below the "Top Thrill" and "Ascend" series. While the Top Thrill line already uses reactive covers and therefore responds more distinctly to friction, the Propel offers an even smoother and more predictable motion thanks to its urethane cover. It clearly sets itself apart from pure polyester balls (such as the Motiv Sniper), however, because unlike plastic the Foundation Urethane cover builds real friction and thus improves pin carry. Across the market, the Propel is best compared to the "Mix" from Storm Bowling, though the more dynamic Tyro™ core inside the Propel should give it somewhat more drive than pure "urethane spare" options. In contrast to solid urethane balls like Storm's "Pitch Black," which read early, the pearl component of the Propel means the ball generates considerably more length and does not burn up in the heads.
On the Lanes
The Motiv Propel's range of use splits primarily into two categories. For beginners it serves as an ideal first ball, since it forgives mistakes in rotation and offers a controllable curve to the pocket without jumping across the deck uncontrollably. Here the urethane surface prevents the often frustrating overreaction of modern reactive balls. For advanced sport bowlers and tournament players, the Propel functions as a specialty tool for extremely dry lanes or burned-up heads. When reactive balls already lose too much energy in the heads ("hook"), the Propel's high RG lets it store energy all the way to the pins. It also works excellently as a premium spare ball for complex spare systems where a minimal amount of hook is desired to optimize the entry angle without giving up the straightness of a plastic ball entirely.
