First Impressions
The DV8 Pitbull Growl was introduced in August 2017 as a powerful addition to the Pitbull series and comes in a striking color scheme of black, purple, and white. Technically, this ball is designed for maximum performance on oily lanes. It uses the asymmetric Pitbull Low RG Core, which at 15 pounds shows a low RG value of 2.486. The total differential is set very high at 0.055, complemented by a strong intermediate differential of 0.020. This combination should promote massive flare potential and an early-starting rotation. The core is wrapped in the Composite Claw Solid Reactive coverstock. The surface is finished at the factory with a matte 500 and 2000 Siaair Micro Pad treatment. This rough structure is designed to make immediate contact with the lane surface and to keep that contact even at high oil volume. Embedding the core in the proven DynamiCore technology should additionally improve the ball's durability and increase energy transfer at impact.
Comparison In comparison, the DV8 Pitbull Growl positions itself as one of the strongest heavy-oil models on the market at the time of its release. Compared to the original DV8 Pitbull, the Pitbull Growl offers a somewhat more aggressive backend reaction thanks to the modified Composite Claw Solid shell, without giving up the midlane strength typical of the series. Compared to the Storm Phaze II, known as a versatile benchmark ball with a solid shell, the Pitbull Growl works considerably earlier and covers noticeably more boards overall. While the Storm Phaze II describes a controlled and rather continuous motion, the Pitbull Growl is built to create considerably more friction and to roll earlier. Compared to the Brunswick Kingpin, also developed for heavy oil, the Pitbull Growl shows somewhat stronger asymmetric dynamics, which should lead to a more defined change of direction at the end of the oil pattern. Against the Hammer Black Widow Legend it offers more traction in the heads, while the Hammer ball generates more length through its surface characteristics.
On the Lanes The ideal application for the DV8 Pitbull Growl is on patterns with high oil volume or very long oil distances. It is a specialist for conditions where conventional balls skid too far and can no longer reach the pocket reliably. If you throw the ball fast, this ball is an excellent tool, since it provides the traction needed to move into the roll phase in time. If you have a high rev rate, you should use the Pitbull Growl above all when you are forced to move deeper into the oil to find something to hold. Thanks to the strong asymmetric core power, the ball should also deliver convincing carry at flatter entry angles. On typical house shots the surface can be adjusted if needed, but the ball shows its full strength in the original matte configuration, cutting through the oil. Once the transition sets in and the heads dry up, however, a switch to a model with more length is advisable, since the Pitbull Growl could otherwise use up too much energy in the front part of the lane. In the opening phase of a tournament on fresh conditions, though, it offers a maximum of reliability and hook potential.
