First Impressions
The Storm Pink Hy-Road, released in October 2017 as a special edition, continues the tradition of one of the most successful ball lines in bowling history. Visually, this model sets itself clearly apart from the classic two-tone look of the original with its striking, solid pink design, while technically staying true to the proven specifications. At its heart sits the Inverted Fe2 Technology, a symmetrical core distinguished by one particular design feature: it does without conventional inner core material, which allows the outer shell to be poured considerably thicker. With a 2.57 RG and a 0.046 differential at 15 lbs, this core offers high inertia and moderate flare potential. The cover is the legendary R2S Hybrid Reactive coverstock, made up of equal parts solid and pearl elements. The factory finish is completed with a 1500-grit polish, giving the ball a shiny appearance. This combination is designed to clear the heads effortlessly and unleash its full dynamics only in the backend. The whole package is rounded out by the scent typical of Storm, which in this edition is often associated with fruity notes like strawberry or mixed berries.
Comparison
In a direct performance comparison, the Storm Pink Hy-Road behaves almost identically to the original Storm Hy-Road, since both are based on the same core-and-cover combination. The essential difference lies in the visual perception of the ball's rotation across the boards, which can help you when analyzing the transition. Compared to the Storm Hy-Road Pearl, the Pink Hy-Road reads the midlane somewhat earlier thanks to its hybrid content. While the pearl version tends to skid very far and make a sharper change of direction at the breakpoint, the hybrid cover of the Pink Hy-Road provides a rounder, more controllable arc shape. Against a powerhouse like the Storm Phaze II, which has a considerably stronger symmetrical core and a dull solid surface, the Pink Hy-Road plays much cleaner through the heads and saves its energy for the back third of the lane. Compared to entry-level balls such as the Storm Tropical series or weaker models like the Roto Grip Hustle, the Pink Hy-Road offers noticeably better carry and more punch in the pocket thanks to the Inverted Fe2 Technology. In many arsenals it serves as the perfect step-down ball when asymmetric giants like the Storm Sure Lock react too early and lose their power.
On the Lanes
The Storm Pink Hy-Road covers a broad spectrum of lane conditions in practice, playing to its strengths above all on medium to medium-dry oil patterns. Thanks to the high RG and the polished surface, it is the ideal choice when the heads have already burned up and more aggressive balls generate hook too early. Because of the thicker shell construction, the ball has a higher coefficient of restitution, which in practice means less energy is lost on impact in the pocket and the pins are cleared away more effectively. If you have a high rev rate, it is an excellent benchmark ball, since it delivers a very predictable reaction without jumping uncontrollably at the breakpoint. If you throw at more moderate ball speed, you'll benefit from the R2S Hybrid cover's ability to store valuable friction energy for the pin impact. It is less suited to extremely long or very heavy oil, where it tends to slide past the breakpoint unless the surface is taken down with an Abralon pad. On typical house shots it lets you stay with the transition over several games simply by making small adjustments with your feet. The combination of clean skid and a continuous, strong drive in the backend makes it one of the most versatile tools for league and tournament bowlers alike.
