First Impressions
Released internationally in August 2023, the Storm PhysiX Tour expands the legendary Premier line with an intriguing hybrid variant for the Asian and European markets. At its heart sits the proven Atomic Core, an asymmetric weight block that, with a 2.48 RG and a 0.053 differential (at 15 lbs), produces extremely fast rev-up and high flare potential. This aggressive engine is wrapped in the NeX Hybrid Reactive coverstock. Unlike earlier PhysiX models that were often sanded to a matte finish (such as the Proton), the Tour arrives with a 1500-grit polished finish. This combination of a strong nano hybrid cover and polish gives the ball a classy look in black, red and silver, and promises clean length through the heads along with massive energy retention.
Comparison
Compared directly to the Storm Infinite PhysiX, which used a ReX Pearl cover at 4000 grit, the PhysiX Tour goes a bit longer thanks to the polish and stores more energy for the breakpoint. Where the Infinite PhysiX describes a very round, almost "banana-shaped" motion over the entire lane, the PhysiX Tour shows a more pronounced reaction to friction in the backend. Using the Roto Grip RST X-3 as a reference, the PhysiX Tour rolls up slightly earlier (due to the very low RG of the Atomic core), but offers a similarly defined entry angle. Against a classic benchmark ball like the Storm Phaze II, it is considerably cleaner through the first 15 feet of the lane and creates more angle on the backend without reacting as sharply as pure pearl balls (the AstroPhysiX, for example).
On the Lanes
The Storm PhysiX Tour is made for medium to heavy oil conditions where the lane is already showing the first signs of breakdown ("transition"). When pure solid balls (like the Proton PhysiX) start losing energy too early or burning up, the Tour is the perfect follow-up. The NeX component in the hybrid cover gives it enough chemical "tooth" not to slide out in the oil, while the polish lets it glide effortlessly through played-in heads. It is ideal if you love the security of a strong asymmetric core but need more push through the front part of the lane in order to play deeper angles.
