First Impressions
The Storm PhysiX Raze continues the successful PhysiX series, combining proven technology with modern chemistry. Visually, the ball immediately catches the eye with its Blaze Orange, Ink Blue and Black color scheme, accompanied by the characteristic strawberry-banana scent. Inside works the further developed Atomic A.I. core, an asymmetric design with a low RG of 2.47 and a high differential of 0.055 (at 15 lbs), rounded out by a strong intermediate differential of 0.018. These numbers promise a quick rev-up and massive flare potential. The surface choice is interesting: Storm uses the XT-II Solid Reactive cover here, but ships it with the Power Edge finish. This combination of a firm solid shell and a polished finish suggests that, despite its chemical aggressiveness, the ball glides through the heads surprisingly easily before releasing its energy.
Comparison
Compared to the original Storm PhysiX, which was known for its rough nano surface and extremely early read of the lane, the PhysiX Raze goes noticeably longer and cleaner through the front part of the lane. Thanks to the Power Edge finish, it stores more energy for the backend than, for example, a Storm Proton PhysiX, which digs into the boards much earlier. The motion is closer to a Storm Infinite PhysiX, but with the typical rounder shape of a solid cover once the friction takes hold. While a Roto Grip Gem often shows a very slow, rolling motion, the PhysiX Raze offers a more dynamic reaction at the breakpoint thanks to the A.I. core, without looking as sharp as pure pearl balls. In terms of performance, it sits right between the big "snowplow" balls for the heaviest oil and the fast pearls for dry backends.
On the Lanes
The PhysiX Raze is ideally positioned for fresh house shots as well as medium to heavy oil scenarios where you need traction in the oil but also want length through the heads. The polished solid cover keeps the ball from burning up energy too early, which makes it an excellent choice when pure dull solids feel too sluggish or pearls react too unpredictably on over/under. It provides outstanding carry, since the Atomic A.I. core keeps the pins very flat. When the transition sets in and you have to move deeper into the pocket, the stored energy still allows a powerful arc, as long as there is enough oil left in the middle of the lane.
