First Impressions
The Storm PhysiX Burst is an exclusive overseas release that expands the popular PhysiX series with an extremely aggressive cover. Visually, the ball comes in a deep dark purple color and features the signature Storm fragrance, which for this model is a fruity Blueberry Smoothie scent. The heart of the ball is the asymmetric Atomic Core, which at 15 pounds boasts a low RG of 2.48, a high differential of 0.053, and a mass bias of 0.017. This combination of hard specifications is designed to get the ball revving up quickly and to generate massive flare potential. The core is wrapped in the RX Solid Reactive cover, which comes out of the box with a matte 2000-grit finish. This specific shell formulation was originally designed for other international series and is engineered to ensure very early traction on the lane.
Comparative Analysis When comparing the Storm PhysiX Burst to the original Storm Proton PhysiX, which also relies on the Atomic Core, one can see a similar foundational motion with a very strong read in the midlane. While the Proton PhysiX displaces an extreme amount of oil with its rough NeX Solid cover and often hooks very early, the RX Solid cover of the PhysiX Burst is designed to push marginally cleaner through the front part of the lane, saving slightly more energy for the backend. If placed next to a symmetric benchmark model like the Storm Phaze II, the significantly sharper hook of the PhysiX Burst is immediately apparent. Where the Phaze II is known for a very smooth and even transition, the asymmetric nature of the PhysiX Burst creates a much more abrupt change of direction and more destructive carry through the pins.
Practical Application On the lane, the Storm PhysiX Burst shows its greatest strengths on medium to heavy oil patterns. It is an ideal tool for conditions where the front of the lane is heavily oiled, yet the ball still needs to securely find its way to the pocket. The rough 2000-grit finish generates the necessary friction early on to prevent the ball from sliding on fresh oil. Bowlers with lower to medium rev rates will benefit from the inherent strength of the asymmetric core, as the ball naturally crosses many boards and creates a massive hook on its own. High-rev players can use this ball to play deep lines in heavy oil, but they will need to adjust quickly on drying lanes and switch to weaker equipment, as the PhysiX Burst might otherwise burn up too much energy early in the transition and hit the pins weakly.
