First Impressions
The Storm Phaze comes in an extremely eye-catching Royal, Yellow and Copper Pearl color mix. At the center of this model beats the powerful symmetrical Velocity Core, which features a low 2.480 RG and a high 0.051 differential. The outer layer consists of the innovative AX-16 Pearl Reactive coverstock, finished at the factory with a 1500 grit polish. This combination of an extremely early-revving engine and the highly polished pearl cover should let the ball glide easily through the heads while still providing a predictable, powerful midlane reaction.
Comparison
Compared to the later Storm Phaze II, which has a strong matte solid cover, the original Phaze offers noticeably more length and a more agile, if at times touchy, backend reaction. Against the Storm Hy-Road, the Phaze delivers a considerably earlier roll phase through the heads thanks to its lower RG. When friction on the lane increases and the transition dries up the front part of the lane, the AX-16 cover often reacts very aggressively. It stores its energy extremely well, but sometimes reacts less predictably than smooth solid covers. The hook is sharp and hard-hitting.
On the Lanes
The Storm Phaze is best suited to lane conditions with medium oil volume. For strokers and tweeners, it offers the option of playing deep lines on broken-down patterns, since the surface finds little hold in the front part of the lane. The strong drive toward the pocket should deliver convincing carry, as the ball accelerates aggressively at the breakpoint. Once the lane shows uneven oil, however, the polish can make the ball hard to control. In those moments a matte cover is the better call.
