First Impressions
The Storm Phaze Zero presents itself as a consistent evolution of the proven Phaze series and is aimed squarely at bowlers who face high oil volumes. The combination of the GI-17 solid cover and the Velocity Core is meant to handle heavy oil beyond all previous versions. GI-17 stands for Game Improvement 2017 and is an exclusive chemical formula from Storm whose toughness was developed specifically to fight heavy oil and generate midlane roll. The proven Velocity Core brings along its characteristic low RG paired with a higher differential, which gives the ball its specific motion characteristics. This fast-revving version of the supercharged Velocity Core should smooth out the backend reaction without overreacting and avoid unwanted last-second movement.
Comparison
Compared to its Phaze siblings, the Zero is the most aggressive version for high oil volumes. While the Storm Phaze II with its TX-16 solid cover and 3000 grit surface was designed for medium to heavy oil, the Zero goes one step further toward heavy oil performance with its GI-17 Solid. Its toughness was developed specifically to fight thick, plentiful oil and create midlane roll, which should help the world's top bowlers with midlane control. Against the Storm Phaze AI with its TX-16 pearl cover, the Zero offers considerably more friction in oil thanks to its solid surface, and therefore an earlier reaction. The Zero's philosophy also differs from the Storm Phaze Flow, since that ball is likewise built for heavy oil but shows different characteristics with its GI-18 solid surface.
On the Lanes
The Storm Phaze Zero is primarily suited to bowlers who regularly play lanes with high oil volumes and need control in the midlane. The low RG and high differential of the Velocity Core construction made it the preferred platform for pros worldwide, since its benchmark characteristics serve a wide variety of styles on different patterns. Power players with higher rev rates in particular benefit from the ball's ability to react in a controlled manner even in heavy oil while still saving enough energy for the backend. The nature of the core gives it plenty of movement through the higher differential, but with the forgiveness that all bowlers love to see. Strokers and tweeners can use the Zero to get a dependable midlane reaction on fresh, oily patterns without the ball giving up too early or overturning on the backend. For tournament players it is a solid option when other balls can't find enough traction in high oil volume or react too late.
