First Impressions
The Storm Phaze Frenzy was released in March 2018 as an exclusive overseas model, adding a hybrid variant to the legendary Phaze series. Visually, the ball comes in an attractive color combination of Silver, Blue and Purple. Inside, Storm relies on the proven Velocity Core, a symmetrical core known for its high dynamics and quick rotation. In the 15-pound version, this core has a low RG of 2.48 and a high differential of 0.051. The coverstock is the innovative GI-18 Hybrid Reactive, developed specifically to leave a massive footprint on the lane. The factory finish is matted with a 3000 grit Abralon pad, giving the ball a tacky texture. This combination should produce a powerful overall motion, which according to the manufacturer represented the strongest motion of any symmetrical Storm ball at the time of release.
Comparison Compared to the legendary Storm Phaze II (solid), the Phaze Frenzy offers a somewhat cleaner skid phase through the heads thanks to the GI-18 hybrid cover, but responds at the breakpoint with a noticeably steeper entry angle. While the Phaze II is known for its extremely even and controlled arc shape, the Phaze Frenzy was designed to offer roughly 5% more combined midlane reaction and backend angle than the solid model. Compared to the original Storm Phaze (pearl), the Frenzy shows distinctly earlier traction and a substantially higher total hook capacity on oily lanes. Compared to the Storm Phaze III, which came later with the R3S Hybrid cover, the Phaze Frenzy is more aggressive and more stable through the midlane due to the GI-18 technology. Against a symmetrical benchmark ball like the Storm IQ Tour Solid, the Phaze Frenzy offers massively more board coverage and a far more dynamic end-of-lane motion, placing it more in the high-performance powerhouse segment.
On the Lanes The Storm Phaze Frenzy is designed primarily for medium to heavy oil conditions and works as an excellent option if you want to combine the stability of a symmetrical core with the aggressiveness of a hybrid cover. The 3000 matte finish lets the ball find friction reliably even on fresh patterns, without "checking out" as early as extremely dull solid balls. The Velocity Core gets the ball into its roll phase quickly, which particularly helps if you throw the ball fast and need to avoid missing the breakpoint. For rev-dominant players, the Phaze Frenzy offers impressive continuation through the pins, since the ball stores its energy efficiently and releases it powerfully only in the back part of the lane. On typical house shots (THS), it lets you play deeper angles once the transition sets in and the outside boards get too dry. On very dry surfaces, on the other hand, the combination of a strong core and a hybrid cover could react too early, making a weaker pearl model the smarter choice. In the pocket, the ball stands out with the characteristic "Phaze carry," rounded out by the quick core rotation and the mulberry scent.
