First Impressions
The Radical Outer Limits Black Hole presents itself as a visually understated but technically sophisticated addition to the Outer Limits series. The ball comes in an all-black design with violet logos and conveys a classic aesthetic on looks alone. Inside works the proven asymmetric Outer Limits core, which at 15 pounds carries a 2.499 RG, a 0.051 differential and a 0.014 intermediate differential. These numbers mark it as an asymmetric ball with moderate values, which should point to a controllable release of power. One significant change is the cover material. Radical uses the HK22C solid coverstock technology here, where the "C" stands for "Cohesion" and marks a further development of the original HK22 blend. Despite being classified as a solid ball, the Black Hole ships from the factory with a shiny finish. The surface is worked through 500, 1000 and 1500 Siaair and then sealed with Crown Factory Compound. This combination of a tacky solid cover and a polished surface aims to fill a gap in the lineup, since shiny solids are less common on the market. In addition, the outer shell is reinforced with DynamiCore technology, which should increase durability and optimize hitting power at the pins.
Comparison
Compared directly to the original Outer Limits (Solid), clear differences in ball reaction show up. While the predecessor was considered a "hook monster" that covered roughly three to seven boards more than a typical benchmark ball and revved up very early, the Black Hole is considerably cleaner through the front part of the lane. Analysis suggests the shiny surface helps the ball generate more length and store energy for the end of the oil pattern. In contrast to the rounder, smoother motion of the original solid, the Black Hole is characterized by a more angular reaction at the breakpoint. It responds faster to friction, but still doesn't offer the extremely aggressive skid/flip motion of a true pearl ball, instead delivering a more controlled yet still angular move. Compared with other balls such as the Roto Grip Viking (a hybrid), the Black Hole is described as stronger and more reactive, especially once the lane dries up. Also interesting is the parallel to the Conspiracy Scheme from the past: like that ball, the Black Hole seems extremely responsive to surface adjustments. Take the polish off (for example with a 2000-grit sanding) and the character of the ball changes drastically toward a much earlier and overall stronger total motion, which could bring to mind balls like the Guru Limited.
On the Lanes
The Radical Outer Limits Black Hole is conceived as a versatile tool that can cover a broad range of conditions depending on surface preparation. In its out-of-the-box configuration with the compound finish, it works excellently on house shots and in situations where the lane is already showing transition. The shiny surface lets the ball glide effortlessly through the heads, while the solid base in the coverstock still provides a certain amount of security through the midlane. That makes it especially attractive if you're looking for a ball reaction that combines length with a dependable change of direction without becoming uncontrollable. Different player types get different use cases here. If you're rev-dominant, you should benefit from the extra length and control, since the ball doesn't burn up too early. If you're speed-dominant or have a balanced ratio of speed and revs, on the other hand, you may benefit from adjusting the surface. Removing the polish or sanding to rougher values (for example 2000 grit) should turn the ball into a tacky weapon for heavier oil that reads considerably earlier and produces a continuous motion through the pocket. Regardless of surface, the ball stands out with excellent carry, and the energy transfer into the pins often means that even less than perfectly hit pockets still fall ("messengers"). It thus offers a flexible option that can be used both as a first ball on a fresh house shot and later in the block once the lanes break down.
