BOWLING BALL INFOS

First Impressions
Released in June 2018, the Hammer Onyx Vibe marks the triumphant return of one of the most popular ball lines in bowling history. Hammer brought the Vibe back to dominate the lighter-oil segment, and the Onyx Vibe did not disappoint. Visually it's a classic: deep black ("Onyx") with silver logos, giving it a timeless "stealth" look. Inside works the legendary symmetric Vibe core. With a 2.51 RG and a 0.042 differential (in 15 lbs), this core offers one of the best combinations of length and backend pop in the mid-price segment. The special part is the cover: it's the CT Reactive Solid surface, but finished at the factory with Powerhouse Factory Finish polish. That makes it a "polished solid," a configuration that is often underrated.
Comparison
Compared directly to the nearly simultaneously available Hammer Cherry Vibe (which used a pearl cover), the Onyx Vibe offers an interesting nuance. Where the Cherry Vibe skids longer, as pearls typically do, and reacts more sharply at the end ("skid-flip"), the Onyx Vibe reads the lane a touch earlier thanks to the solid base chemistry and provides a rounder, more controllable arc at the breakpoint. It is less prone to squirting through the oil line than the Cherry. Drawing the comparison to the legendary original Blue Vibe, the Onyx Vibe is its spiritual successor: it offers the same effortless length, but with somewhat more modern cover technology for today's oils. It competes directly with balls like the Storm Hy-Road (although the Hy-Road is stronger) or the Roto Grip Hustle, with the Vibe traditionally having a bit more "motor" than pure entry-level balls.
On the Lanes
The Hammer Onyx Vibe is the undisputed "king of value." It is made for light to medium oil patterns and typical house leagues. Its greatest strength is its versatility on drier lanes. When the "big" balls start hooking too early, the Onyx Vibe is the rescue. It glides cleanly through the heads, but thanks to the polished solid cover it doesn't react overly nervously to friction. That makes it a favorite if you have a high rev rate and are looking for control, but also for strokers who need a ball that still has enough energy left for the pins on worn lanes. It's a ball that often performs well above its price class.
