First Impressions
The Storm Omega Crux comes in an elegant white, copper and graphite design with a signature cinnamon scent. The technical specs show a 2.50 RG, a 0.052 differential and a 0.017 intermediate differential in the 15-pound version. At the heart of the ball sits the asymmetric Catalyst core, already used successfully throughout the Crux series. The new GI-20 Pearl Reactive coverstock with a 3000-grit Abralon finish is something special, since only a few pearl balls leave the factory with a matte surface. The official release date was February 21, 2020.
Comparison
The Omega Crux is most accurately described as a Storm Crux Prime that turns much harder in the backend phase. Compared to the Storm Crux Prime, the Omega Crux hooks less early and offers more length through the heads, but develops a stronger change of direction in the backend. Against balls like the Storm Physix, Storm Gravity Evolve or Storm Pro Motion, it reacts noticeably earlier and more aggressively. Compared to the polished Storm Phaze III, the matte surface gives the Omega Crux a more predictable ball reaction on fresh lane conditions. The 3000-grit surface gives it more traction than polished balls such as the Storm Phaze III or Storm IQ Tour Emerald, but less overall hook than balls with stronger coverstocks like the Storm Gravity Evolve or Storm Crux Prime.
On the Lanes
The GI-20 Pearl Reactive coverstock was developed specifically for heavy oil conditions and should deliver an ideal skid-hook-roll reaction. The ball is characterized by a very readable, overall smooth motion with predictable but distinct transitions. The Omega Crux positions itself as a versatile mid-range ball — with too much oil its power isn't quite enough, with too little it gets too aggressive, but in between the surface combines sufficient oil tolerance with good backend motion. It shows its strengths especially on sport shots, offering various ways to play into the pocket along with a reliable, less jumpy motion compared to more aggressive asymmetricals. On flatter sport shot conditions it provides midlane motion and backend control. The GI-20 technology should allow the ball to recover from nearly any position on the lane.
