First Impressions
The Visionary Ogre Solid, which laid the groundwork for the highly successful Ogre series back in November 2006, presents itself as a controllable and extremely dependable option for oilier lane conditions. Visually, the ball stands out with its distinctive color blend of green and black pour units, giving it a classic, understated look. At the heart of this model sits the purpose-built, namesake symmetrical Ogre core. This is an elaborate dual-density design that additionally features a special flip cap to steer energy transfer down the lane efficiently and evenly. With a comparatively high radius of gyration of 2.59 and a moderate differential of 0.029, the core belongs to the designs that naturally generate very clean length and only enter a roll phase late. The cover is an in-house solid reactive material. Out of the box, the surface is dulled to a rough finish. This preparation should ensure that the ball builds traction in the oil early despite its lazy core, rather than sliding uncontrolled through the heads. Comparison
Drawing a comparison to the established Storm Phaze II reveals highly interesting conceptual differences. The Storm Phaze II relies on an extremely strong symmetrical core with a very low RG value combined with an exceptionally tacky dull solid surface. On the Phaze II, this results in very early engagement in the oil and an extremely round, gentle motion that stretches evenly across the entire lane. The Visionary Ogre Solid behaves completely differently after release, since its core architecture is laid out for a considerably higher RG value. While the Ogre's dull solid cover also looks for friction early, the mass distribution in the core means the Ogre Solid conserves its rotational energy through the front part of the lane significantly better than the Phaze II. When both balls hit friction at the end of the oil pattern, the Ogre Solid produces a slightly later but still very controllable and steady arc toward the pocket. In direct contrast to balls with a very low RG value, the Ogre Solid is far less inclined to burn up early on drying lanes. Even so, thanks to its reactive shell it offers exactly the traction in oil you expect from a true solid construction, which makes it more flexible in terms of placement.
On the Lanes
The primary application for the Visionary Ogre Solid is lane conditions with medium oil volume as well as fresh house shots. Thanks to the roughened surface combined with the specially weighted core, it is an excellent choice when a harmonious mix of effortless length and controlled midlane read is called for. If you have a lower rev rate, you'll benefit enormously from the tacky solid cover, since the ball grabs early enough on its own to develop a reliable hook while the core simultaneously provides the length you absolutely need. The symmetrical core reliably helps bring the ball back across more boards even from deeper angles, while the dull shell prevents a sudden overreaction on contact with dry friction. Another essential performance trait of this model is its excellent carry. The late roll of the high-RG core should give the ball extremely high forward energy as it hits the pin deck. That drives the pins deep into the pit and noticeably minimizes the risk of leaving corner pins. All told, the ball is a very versatile tool for tournament players and league bowlers looking for a strong yet long-lasting reaction.
