First Impressions
The Motiv Octane Burn comes in a striking black and orange pearl color blend. At the heart of this model beats the proven symmetric Quadfire Core, which carries a higher RG of 2.550 and a moderate differential of 0.043. The outer layer consists of the Helix Halogen Reactive cover, polished out of the box to an extreme high gloss with a 5500 grit LSP finish. This combination of a late-revving motor and the extremely smooth surface should let the ball glide through the heads incredibly easily and deliver a very late but extremely dynamic reaction.
Comparison
Compared to the Motiv Venom Shock, with its strong dull solid cover, the Octane Burn offers drastically more length and a far more angular backend reaction. Against the Storm Hy-Road Pearl, the Octane Burn delivers similarly clean length through the boards. When friction on the lane increases and the transition dries up the front part of the lane completely, this ball benefits enormously from its high RG and the pearl surface. It stores its energy almost perfectly and delivers an extremely sharp hook at the end of the lane.
On the Lanes
The Motiv Octane Burn is best suited to lane conditions with light to medium oil volume. For strokers and tweeners it offers the option of playing deep lines on heavily used patterns, since the surface finds no unwanted hold. The delayed drive toward the pocket should provide convincing carry, as the ball accelerates at just the right moment. As soon as the lane gets extremely wet, however, the ball slides through mercilessly. In those situations a dull cover is a must so you don't miss the breakpoint.
