First Impressions
The Roto Grip No Rules Pearl was released in January 2017 as the shiny counterpart to the original No Rules and expands the manufacturer's HP4 line. The ball catches the eye with its striking Onyx, Neon Green and Silver color scheme. At the center of it all sits the asymmetric Chaotic Core, developed for high dynamics and continuous energy transfer. In the 15-pound version this core delivers an RG of 2.51, a differential of 0.053 and an intermediate differential of 0.018. Wrapped around this powerhouse is the Amped Pearl Reactive cover, finished at the factory with a 1500-grit polish. This combination should ensure a clean skid phase through the heads while still building enough friction in the midlane to trigger a powerful change of direction.
Comparison
Within the Roto Grip lineup, the No Rules Pearl offers noticeably more length and a more angular breakpoint than the original No Rules Solid, which reacts to friction considerably earlier thanks to its matte surface. Compared to the Storm Code Black, which also relies on a strong asymmetric core/cover combination, the No Rules Pearl shows a somewhat more stable midlane presence, while the Code Black is often perceived as even more explosive off the backend. Against the Roto Grip Dare Devil, which uses the same Amped cover, the more massive Chaotic Core of the No Rules Pearl produces a clearly higher flare potential and an overall stronger total hook rating. It thus closes the gap between extremely aggressive solid balls for heavy oil and the pure skid/flip options for drier conditions.
On the Lanes
The ideal application range for the Roto Grip No Rules Pearl lies on medium to medium-heavy oil conditions. Thanks to its pearl characteristics, the ball should get through the heads effortlessly, even once the oil has already been broken up by transition. High-performance bowlers with high rev rates benefit from the ball's ability to play deeper angles and still arrive in the pocket with sufficient carry. If you play at moderate speed, the asymmetric core provides the support needed to maintain a controlled but strong motion not only off the backend but throughout the entire length of the lane. Should the lanes provoke an uncontrolled jump at the breakpoint, the surface can be lightly dulled with an Abralon pad to smooth out the reaction without losing the ball's fundamental aggressiveness.
