First Impressions
The Storm Night Road SE (often simply known as the Night Road) carries the legendary Hy-Road dynasty into a new era. Visually it comes in an elegant "Midnight Black," which gives it a very understated, stealth-like aesthetic. But looks are deceiving: under the black hood, Storm combines two proven technologies. First, there's the iconic Inverted Fe² core, the same one that drives the original Hy-Road. With an extremely high 2.57 RG and a 0.046 differential (at 15 lbs), this core is designed to conserve energy for as long as possible. Second, there's the ReX Pearl Reactive coverstock, which already proved itself on the Dark Code and the Fate. The surface is often finished at the factory with 4K-Fast Finish (or Reacta Gloss), which creates a subtle shine. This mixture promises the length of a Hy-Road, but with noticeably more bite (traction) on the dry thanks to the more modern ReX chemistry.
Comparison
Compared directly to the classic Storm Hy-Road (Hybrid), which is the benchmark for versatility, the Night Road SE is considerably more angular and aggressive off the backend. Where the original Hy-Road describes a smooth arc, the Night Road uses the ReX cover to react faster to friction ("snap"). It's substantially stronger than the Hy-Road Pearl, since the ReX cover has more traction than the older R2S Pearl material. Compared to the Storm Phaze V, which was released around the same time, the Night Road offers even more length and a somewhat later reaction thanks to its higher RG (2.57 vs. 2.55). The Phaze V revs up a bit earlier, while the Night Road gives the feeling of gliding forever before turning abruptly. It's essentially a "Hy-Road on steroids" for modern oil volumes.
On the Lanes
The Storm Night Road SE is a weapon for medium oil conditions and dry backends. Its signature strength is length: thanks to the high RG value, it almost completely ignores the first 40 feet of the lane, even when the heads have already dried up ("fried heads"). That makes it an ideal ball for the later games of a tournament or league night. When you're forced to move deep inside and send the ball out over the gutter, the Night Road provides the energy retention needed to still drive powerfully through the pin deck. It should be handled with care on very fresh or long oil, though, since the core may go too long there ("squirt"), which can lead to weak hits (washouts, for example).
