BOWLING BALL INFOS

First Impressions
The Motiv Nebula shows up in a striking Cosmic Black Pearl design, where the deep black high-gloss look with fine shading creates an almost otherworldly appearance. With this ball Motiv ventures into new territory, since the development targets maximum angle and explosive backend reactions. At the center of the Nebula works the brand-new Hadron Core, Motiv's first symmetrical dual-density core in over eight years. This innovative core should create a versatile foundation with a 2.50 RG at 15 pounds and a 0.045 differential. At 16 pounds the differential drops to 0.038, while at 14 pounds it rises to a higher value. The special feature of the Hadron Core lies in the high-density flip block at the bottom end, which should deliver an explosive reaction at a new level. This core is wrapped in the completely new Dark Matter Propulsion Pearl coverstock, which Motiv describes as the sharpest, cleanest and most angular cover the company has ever produced. The surface comes polished to 5500 grit LSP out of the box, which should give the ball maximum length. With ratings of 74 for length, 90 for backend and 62 for hook, the Nebula slots into the medium oil range, with flare potential listed at over five inches.

Comparison
Compared directly to other bowling balls, the Motiv Nebula positions itself as a distinctly more angular alternative to proven models from Motiv's own lineup. The Motiv Primal Rage Evolution, which is also built for maximum angle and works with the Impulse V2 Core along with the Propulsion FYJ Pearl coverstock, may come closest to the Nebula in character. However, the Primal Rage Evolution has a higher RG of 2.55 and a stronger differential of 0.050, which in theory would mean more flare potential. The Nebula, with its lower RG and smaller differential, should get into motion earlier while at the same time working more controllably through the pins. Compared to the Motiv Hyper Venom, which is equipped with the proven Gear Core and shows a 2.48 RG along with a 0.034 differential, the Nebula should show considerably more backend reaction. The Hyper Venom is regarded as the most angular ball in the Venom line, but the Nebula is meant to exceed that angularity once again. The comparison to the Storm Phaze II will also be interesting, as that symmetrical benchmark ball with the Velocity Core and TX-16 Solid coverstock follows an entirely different philosophy. While the Phaze II is known more for its versatility and control, the Nebula aims at maximum backend reaction. Its placement in the Motiv Ball Guide between the Primal Rage Evolution and the Hyper Venom underlines the intent to close a gap in the area of high-gloss, angular-reacting balls. With it, Motiv is trying to push into a segment traditionally dominated by manufacturers like Storm and Brunswick, who already offer established options with models such as the Rockstar or Quantum Bias.

On the Lanes
The Motiv Nebula should prove to be a versatile option for medium oil volumes, though its true potential may come out on lanes with advanced transition or on lighter oil patterns. For bowlers with a balanced ratio between rev rate and ball speed, the Nebula should be a reliable option when the lanes break down and steeper angles are called for. The combination of polished surface and the new coverstock should allow the ball to glide cleanly through the front boards and save its energy for an explosive backend reaction. For rev-dominant bowlers, the Nebula could offer the length needed to keep it from getting into motion too early, while the angular reaction at the end of the lane should provide powerful carry. If you are speed-dominant, you should benefit from the lower RG, which helps the ball develop enough energy for the pocket despite lower rev rate. The Nebula's surface can be adjusted as needed to optimize it for different lane conditions. Taking it down to 3000 or 4000 grit could make the ball playable on fresher oil patterns as well, while polishing would further increase length and angularity. In a bowling arsenal, the Nebula should find its place as a second or third ball, coming into play when more aggressive solid balls roll too early or when the lanes have broken down far enough that a ball with maximum backend reaction is needed. As a first ball it could certainly work on shorter oil patterns or for bowlers with higher speed.
