First Impressions
The Roto Grip MVP Pearl comes in an elegant Royal/Golden/White color combination and uses the proven Neutron NXT Core (symmetric) with a 2.55 RG and a 0.040 differential. The VTC-P19 Pearl Reactive coverstock is delivered out of the box with a 1500-grit polished finish and should provide more backend responsiveness than the hybrid version of the original MVP. With the higher RG value and medium differential, this core produces plenty of length and backend motion, regardless of bowling style.
Comparison
The coverstock change from the original MVP makes this ball a bit cleaner through the heads, a bit stronger off the spot and more continuous on the backend. The stronger direction change on the backend allowed the MVP Pearl to cover more boards than the original MVP. The ball is strongly reminiscent of the Wrecker from a few years back, while other comparisons describe it as a cross between an Idol Pearl/Hustle Ink or an Idol Pearl/Tropical Storm. For some bowlers it shows up as a slightly earlier version of the HyRoad Pearl. The pearl and hybrid versions are nearly identical in shape, with the small differences in coverstock only noticeable to the trained eye.
On the Lanes
This ball was developed to shine on lighter oil patterns as well as on patterns that have transitioned after a few games, when the front part of the lane starts to hook early. It is without a doubt an ideal "go-to" ball when bigger balls get sluggish, and between core and cover it should offer plenty of shape on the backend when you need it. Perfect for beginners, for players with low speed/low revs and for players with high revs and high speed on fresh or dry lane conditions and short oil/low volume patterns. Contrary to expectations, it works as a smooth-rolling ball that is ideal for taming a fresh house shot — as long as the volume isn't high. It offers plenty of roll and smooth motion, ideal for playing along the wet-dry line. The reaction felt very balanced, with a nice visible transition and really good carry through the pins.
