First Impressions
The Ebonite Mission is a historically significant, asymmetric high-performance bowling ball that was originally released in December 2009 and marked the starting point for one of the brand's most successful ball series. At the time of its introduction it was considered the most intensively tested product Ebonite had ever made. Visually, the ball comes in a solid, striking red color that gives the bowler excellent feedback on the lane regarding the rotation axis and how the ball is reading. At the heart of the ball works the asymmetric Mission 1.0 core. At a standard weight of 15 pounds, this core carries a low RG value of 2.490, paired with a strong maximum differential of 0.050 and a moderate intermediate differential of 0.013. These specific architectural numbers point to an engine that gets revved up quickly but is not too extreme by asymmetric standards. This core is wrapped in the XL1200 Solid Reactive coverstock. Out of the box, this cover is sanded with a multi-step Abralon finish of 500, 1000 and 2000 grit. This matte, textured quality of the shell should ensure that the ball transitions into the roll phase extremely early and builds reliable traction in the heads.
Comparison
Compared to other models on the market, the Ebonite Mission shows a very specific ball motion, shaped largely by its balanced relationship between early bite and continuous energy transfer. Set against an extremely early-reading, aggressive ball like the Roto Grip Cell, the Mission reads the lane marginally later in the midlane and glides noticeably cleaner through the heads. As a result it stores more kinetic energy and produces a stronger, more dynamic change of direction at the breakpoint. Comparing it to a modern, established symmetric benchmark ball such as the Storm Phaze II, the difference in core architecture becomes noticeable. Due to its asymmetric design, the Mission crosses more boards overall and creates a more pronounced arcing motion, while the Phaze II describes a more even curve that ramps up more gradually. Against weaker symmetric models like the Ebonite Gamebreaker 2, the Mission generates significantly more total motion and absolutely requires a higher oil volume. The comparatively low intermediate differential of 0.013 keeps the Mission from reacting too angularly or jumpily at the end of the oil pattern, which makes it considerably more predictable than strongly asymmetric balls with higher values.
On the Lanes
In practical use, the Ebonite Mission is designed as an extremely reliable primary option for heavier and longer oil conditions as well as for freshly oiled house lanes. Thanks to the very high-traction surface and the early-rolling core, the model is outstandingly suited to demanding sport patterns where uncontrolled skidding of the ball in the front third of the lane absolutely has to be prevented. If you throw the ball at higher speed or have a lower to medium rev rate, you'll benefit enormously from this technical orientation. The rough cover lets the ball build traction early and develop a steady, easily readable hook that drives powerfully and continuously into the pocket at the end. Bowlers who prefer deeper angles will also find a dependable companion in the Mission, since it saves up enough energy for a strong backend reaction. As soon as the lane dries up with increasing play and the transition sets in, however, the ball's extremely strong reaction can become a problem. When the ball fights the developing friction too early, it burns up its power prematurely. This often leads to noticeably weaker carry and flat hits on the pins. In those moments it is advisable to switch to a ball with a smoother surface or a less reactive symmetric design. Alternatively, the cover offers a high degree of adaptability, so the surface can be individually polished to generate noticeably more length for drier conditions.
