First Impressions
The Brunswick Melee Jab Carbon, released in August 2022, continues one of the brand's most successful product lines. Visually, the ball goes with a classic, deep black "Carbon" pearl design that radiates understatement and elegance. Inside works the legendary symmetric Melee Low RG core, known for its reliability for years now. With a 2.487 RG and a 0.050 differential (at 15 lbs), this core offers an excellent blend of eagerness to rev up and flare. The new part is the cover: here the A.X.H. (Activator Xtreme Hook) pearl reactive coverstock is used, previously found in the Zenith series. The surface is finished with a 500/1000/1500 Siaair sanding followed by Crown Factory Compound. This combination promises a ball reaction that glides very cleanly through the heads and makes a strong but controllable change of direction at the end of the pattern.
Comparison
In a direct comparison with the Brunswick Melee Jab Blood Red, its immediate predecessor, the Carbon uses a stronger base cover (A.X.H. vs. Savvy Hook 2.0). The result is that despite similar length, the Carbon often appears a touch more responsive to friction and generates a bit more total hook without losing the typical "Melee character." Compared to the 900 Global Zen, which is also a strong symmetric pearl, the Melee Jab Carbon often gets into a rounder motion earlier, while the Zen tends to skid even longer and turn the corner harder. Against a ball like the Brunswick Knock Out Bruiser (solid), the difference is clearly defined: the Bruiser is built for fresh oil and early traction, while the Melee Jab Carbon shines when the Bruiser rolls out too early and loses energy. It is the perfect complement for later games.
On the Lanes
The Melee Jab Carbon is the ultimate benchmark pearl for medium oil conditions. Its strength lies in the transition: when the lane starts to break down and the opening balls (usually solids) react too sluggishly, the Carbon offers the length needed to glide over the burned-up heads. Thanks to the proven core, it still stays controllable at all times and avoids the extreme "over/under" reactions some skid-flip balls show. It allows you to open up the pocket and play deeper angles, delivering outstanding carry at the pin deck through its strong entry angle. For tournament players, this ball is often the first choice when you have to move left after game 2 or 3.
