First Impressions
The Ebonite Matrix was released in July 2017, bringing one of the most recognizable names in bowling history back to market with modern technology. Visually, the ball comes in a classy combination of black, gold and silver. Inside works the Matrix Reloaded Core, an asymmetric core that was specifically modified to generate length. At 15 pounds the RG value sits at 2.53, which is relatively high for a high-performance ball and favors skid through the heads. The differential is 0.049, while the intermediate differential is set very low at 0.007. This slight asymmetry should stabilize the ball without making it too aggressive. The cover is the GB 12.7 hybrid coverstock, a further development of the proven Game Breaker shells. Out of the box the ball carries a 500/1000 Abralon finish and is then polished to a high gloss with Powerhouse Factory Finish Polish to store energy for the backend.
Comparison
In comparison, the Ebonite Matrix positions itself as an ideal complement to stronger balls in the Ebonite lineup. Compared to the Ebonite Maverick, which is designed as a heavy-oil ball, the Matrix offers considerably more length and a quicker response to friction at the end of the pattern. Where the Maverick rolls early and plows through the oil, the Matrix skids over it. Compared to the Storm Hy-Road, which is likewise known for its length and hybrid cover, the Matrix shows a somewhat more defined change of direction at the breakpoint thanks to its asymmetric core (despite the low int. diff), while the Hy-Road is rounder. Against the Ebonite Game Breaker 2 Phenom Pearl, the Matrix offers a slightly stronger overall move in the backend, since the GB 12.7 shell is chemically more aggressive than the GB 11.2 version used on the Phenom.
On the Lanes
The ideal application for the Ebonite Matrix is medium oil conditions as well as periods of transition, once the heads have already given up oil. Thanks to the high RG value and the polished hybrid surface, the ball gets through the heads effortlessly and doesn't waste any unnecessary energy. It works exceptionally well if you like to send the ball further right (as a righty) across the boards and want a late but angular reaction into the pocket. The low intermediate differential keeps the ball from "jumping" too violently off dry spots, but still provides enough asymmetric dynamics to improve carry when the entry angle gets flatter. It's often the first ball out of the bag when the strong solids start hooking too early or "burning up."
