BOWLING BALL INFOS

First Impressions
Released in August 2018, the Ebonite Matrix Solid is a special "International Release" (often produced for the Asian market) that also found its way to selected pro shops in Europe. It builds on the success of the original Ebonite Matrix (Hybrid), which came out in 2017. Inside works the distinctive asymmetric Matrix core. This core is technically interesting, since it operates with a relatively high 2.53 RG and a high 0.054 differential (at 15 lbs), plus a moderate 0.009 intermediate diff. This engine is now wrapped in a solid reactive coverstock (likely based on the GB 12.7 chemistry). The factory finish is matte (usually 500/2000 Abralon), which gives the ball a dull look and immediately signals that it is meant to fill the gap the polished original Matrix left open on oilier lanes.
Comparison
Compared directly to the original Ebonite Matrix (green/blue/black), which was polished and hybrid, the Matrix Solid reads the lane noticeably earlier. The core's high RG still provides a relatively effortless trip through the heads, but the solid cover slows the ball down more in the midlane and smooths out the reaction at the breakpoint. It is less snappy than the original, but more predictable in oil. Compared with the nearly simultaneous Ebonite Choice (the big US release in August 2018), the Matrix Solid is somewhat weaker and cleaner. The Choice uses the Mod-1 core (lower RG) and the extremely strong GSV-1 cover, which makes it dig in much earlier. The Matrix Solid works more as a step below the Choice or as a partner to the Ebonite Real One.
On the Lanes
The Ebonite Matrix Solid is an excellent ball for medium to heavier oil patterns where you want to combine length with control. Through the combination of high RG (length) and a solid cover (traction), it avoids the typical problem of many high-end asyms that burn up too early ("roll out"). It skids well through the front part of the lane but builds enough traction in the middle so it doesn't slide through the breakpoint window. It suits players who like the kick of an asymmetric core but prefer a smoother, more flowing motion than the often abrupt hook of the extreme heavy-oil balls. It's a strong option for the first game in league play or on fresh sport patterns with medium volume.
