First Impressions
Released in June 2017, the Storm Match Up Pearl is the logical evolution of the popular Match series and was developed to give bowlers an even more dynamic option in the mid-performance segment. At the heart of this model sits the symmetrical Stinger 2.0 core. At a reference weight of 15 pounds, this core carries an RG of 2.57 and a differential of 0.035. Those numbers signal a construction designed to store energy for the back part of the lane without reacting too early in the heads. The outer shell consists of the proven Reactor Pearl reactive coverstock, finished out of the box with a 1500-grit polish. This smooth, high-gloss surface lets the ball skid through the front part of the lane with minimal friction. Visually, the ball comes in an attractive color combination of black, orange and silver, and it also carries the brand's signature scent, in this case Cider Donut. The technical layout clearly aims at a clean skid phase and a controlled yet energetic reaction at the breakpoint.
Comparison Within the Match family, the Storm Match Up Pearl represents a significant step up from the original Storm Match Pearl. Modifying the core to the Stinger 2.0 increased the differential, which gives the Match Up Pearl greater flare potential and therefore a stronger change of direction. Compared directly to the Storm Match Up Solid released at the same time, the pearl version shows a noticeably longer skid phase and a more angular hook shape. While the solid reads the lane earlier and describes a more arcing motion, the pearl waits for the friction at the end of the oil pattern and then drives into the pocket with more angle. Looking at the ball next to the Storm Hy-Road Pearl, often considered the gold standard for pearl balls, it's apparent that the Match Up Pearl stays somewhat more controllable through the midlane and offers less overall hook, which makes it an excellent choice when the Hy-Road Pearl is already too much of a good thing. Another interesting comparison can be drawn to the Roto Grip Hustle Ink: while the Hustle Ink is known for its extreme continuation, the Match Up Pearl offers a more defined backend reaction thanks to the higher RG and the pearl chemistry. Compared to the high-performance sector, such as the Storm Code Black, the Match Up Pearl is considerably tamer and more forgiving, making it an ideal link between entry-level equipment and the top tier.
On the Lanes The Storm Match Up Pearl reaches its full potential primarily on light to medium oil volumes as well as on typical house shots. It is the ideal tool for situations where the transition has already set in and the heads are starting to dry up. When stronger balls are burning up too much energy in the midlane and no longer generate sufficient carry in the pocket, the Match Up Pearl provides the length needed to reach the breakpoint precisely. If you have a high rev rate, you'll appreciate the ball's ability to get through the front boards without breaking off to the left (for right-handers) uncontrollably. If you have moderate ball speed, it's an outstanding choice for keeping your hitting power on drier conditions. The Reactor cover reacts very sensitively to friction, which gives you clear feedback about the state of the lane. In practice, this ball proves particularly effective when you are forced to move your line a bit further inside, since it creates enough angle to hit the pins with high energy. On very fresh or heavy oil, however, you'll find that the ball skids too long and may not enter the hook phase in time. In a well-rounded arsenal, the Match Up Pearl is therefore the classic "late-evening weapon" or a ball for high-friction lanes where control and energy retention are the top priority.
