First Impressions
The Brunswick Mastermind Strategy shows up in an eye-catching violet, blue and mustard solid design. Inside works the asymmetric Mastermind Ultra Low RG core with a 2.488 RG, a 0.052 differential and a 0.015 intermediate differential. For the cover, Brunswick relies on the Relativity Solid Reactive coverstock, scuffed out of the box with a 500 and 2000 Siaair Micro Pad finish. These specs should ensure that the ball builds excellent traction in the heads and develops a strong, even hook through the midlane. The matte nature of the cover supports control in heavy oil volumes.
Comparison
Compared directly to the Brunswick Mastermind Brainiac with its pearl cover, the Mastermind Strategy grabs noticeably earlier and offers a stronger overall reaction in oil. Against a symmetric benchmark ball like the Storm Phaze II, the asymmetric core of the Mastermind Strategy delivers a somewhat more angular and more pronounced change of direction at the breakpoint. Once the lane transition sets in and friction on the boards increases, the solid shell of the Mastermind Strategy loses energy more quickly. In that case, a switch to a polished model is needed.
On the Lanes
The Brunswick Mastermind Strategy shows its ideal performance on heavy lane conditions. It is the perfect choice if you want to play a direct line up the boards on fresh patterns without the ball skidding through. The asymmetric core should maximize carry through a consistent entry angle into the pocket. Once the oil pattern is broken down, however, the rough surface can react too early and leave the ball hitting flat, which is why it is most effective as a first ball on heavy oil.
