At the heart of this bowling ball sits the iconic Centripetal core, a symmetrical design known for its extremely low RG of 2.48 and a medium-high differential of 0.050. Even before the first shot, these numbers suggest that the ball tends to get into rotation very quickly and rev up early. This proven core is wrapped in the NeX Solid Reactive coverstock, a chemical formulation known for its nano technology and originally developed to create more friction in oil than conventional coverstocks. The factory 3000-grit Abralon finish underlines the aggressive character of the ball and indicates that it is built less for length and more for an early, stable read of the lane. Visually, the ball comes in a solid color scheme that helps you track rotation and transitions on the lane. The combination of the quick-revving Centripetal core and the tacky NeX cover suggests a ball reaction that is very controlled and arcing without giving up hitting power at the pins. This is a piece designed to ignore the heads and release its energy primarily in the midlane, ensuring a continuous hook through the pin deck.
Comparison
Within Storm's own lineup, the Marvel Smash is best placed in relation to the Storm Phaze II. While both balls are conceived as symmetrical solids for heavier oil volumes, the Marvel Smash should produce a somewhat rounder and even earlier motion via the Centripetal core than the Velocity core of the Phaze II. In contrast to the Storm Marvel Pearl, which shows more length and a quicker reaction to friction on the backend thanks to its polished pearl cover, the Smash positions itself as the clearly more stable, almost "heavier" option that should compensate better for slickness in the oil. On the Lanes
The Storm Marvel Smash is predestined for use on medium to heavy oil patterns where control and traction take priority over maximum backend angle. If you start on fresh oil, this ball provides the security needed to prevent the ball from sliding through the heads while still holding enough energy for carry. It is excellent for defining the first lines on the lane and "blending" the oil, meaning it softens the transitions between oil and dry. If you throw the ball fast (speed dominant), you could especially benefit from the combination of the low RG core and the NeX solid cover, since the ball naturally revs up early and thus helps generate the necessary hook despite high speed. But rev-dominant players will also find an interesting option here as a benchmark ball on very wet lanes, since it doesn't tend to react overly jumpy to friction. The ideal line for this ball is probably not the extremely deep game from far left across a lot of boards, since it might lack the energy at the end for that, but rather the controlled game around the second to fourth arrows. Once the lane begins moving into the transition phase and the heads dry up, the Marvel Smash may start losing energy too early; at that point a move to a pearl ball or a weaker solid would be advisable. In summary, the Marvel Smash is a workhorse for the grind that offers reliability when the lane is slick and paves the way to the pocket with an early but steady motion.
