First Impressions
The Columbia 300 Madness comes in a striking color scheme of Yellow, Black and Bronze and brings the successful HK22 technology further into the brand's line-up. Technically, the ball is built around the new asymmetric Craze core, which carries a 2.495 RG, a 0.048 differential and a 0.012 intermediate differential (at 15 lbs). These numbers promise strong rotation while remaining controllable. This core is paired with the HK22 - ERT Pearl coverstock. Out of the box, the surface is sanded with 500/1000/1500 Siaair and then polished with Crown Factory Compound. This high-gloss look signals the intended purpose immediately: easy glide through the heads and a lightning-quick reaction to friction in the backend ("skid-flip").
Comparison
Compared directly to the **Columbia 300 Top Speed** (which also uses HK22, but as a hybrid), the Madness shows more length and an even more defined move at the breakpoint thanks to its pure pearl cover. Where the Top Speed reads the midlane a bit earlier, the Madness stores its energy longer. Next to the **Columbia 300 Cuda PowerCOR Pearl**, the Madness comes across as noticeably more aggressive; since the Cuda has a symmetric core, it rolls rounder, whereas the asymmetric Craze core of the Madness produces a steeper entry angle into the pocket. Compared to a competitor like the **Hammer Black Widow Ghost Pearl**, the Madness offers comparable length, but thanks to the HK22 base it often reacts a tick faster to dry boards ("quicker off the spot").
On the Lanes
The Madness is the ideal ball for medium oil conditions and especially for the transition phase, when the lane starts to break down. It is not an option for heavy oil, since out of the box it would slide too far there. Its strength lies in opening up angles: when benchmark balls hook too early or hit the pins "flat", the Madness lets you move further inside and throw the ball out to the dry outside boards. It generates a lot of "pop" in the backend, and the asymmetric core delivers excellent carry even when the entry angle is steep.
