First Impressions
The Roto Grip Loco (Solid) comes in a classic, all-solid design. At the center of this model beats the symmetrical Late Roll 48 core, which carries a 2.570 RG and a low 0.025 differential. The outer layer consists of the 45L Solid Reactive coverstock, finished out of the box with a matte 1500 grit Polished/Sanded finish. This combination of a late-rolling core and the slightly scuffed surface should let the ball build length while still delivering an extremely predictable, arcing reaction.
Comparison
Compared to the pearl version of the Loco, the Loco Solid offers noticeably more early traction and a far smoother backend reaction. Against the Storm Match Solid, the Loco Solid provides an extremely similar, soft change of direction thanks to its moderate specs. When friction on the lane increases and the transition dries up the front part of the lane, this ball reacts enormously steadily. It stores its energy very well without throwing wild corners. The hook is clean and assertive.
On the Lanes
The Roto Grip Loco (Solid) is ideally suited to lane conditions with light oil volume. For strokers and tweeners it offers the option of playing direct lines on dried-up patterns, since the surface finds controlled hold in the heads. The steady drive toward the pocket should deliver convincing carry, as the ball rolls smoothly through the pin deck. Once the lane is heavily oiled, however, the ball can slide through. In those situations a stronger cover is a must.
