First Impressions
The Storm Lock-On, an overseas release that came out in August 2025, brings the legendary RAD-X core technology back to the lanes, this time in a new guise. Visually the ball impresses with a mix of Violet, Deep Purple and Black, accompanied by a "Cherry Vanilla Cupcake" scent. Inside works the proven asymmetric RAD-X core, known for its extreme torque numbers (RG 2.48, diff 0.054, int. diff 0.018 at 15 lbs). Unlike many current Storm balls, the Lock-On deliberately does without the A.I. (Amplified Inertia) outer core technology in order to preserve the classic, familiar feel of the Lock series. This powerhouse is paired with the new RX Pearl Reactive coverstock and the glossy Power Edge finish. This combination promises a ball that glides effortlessly through the heads before the core releases its massive energy in the backend.
Comparison
Compared directly to the original Storm Lock, which read considerably earlier and rolled rounder with its GI-15 hybrid shell, the Lock-On goes substantially longer and is more aggressive at the breakpoint. It is strongly reminiscent of the popular Storm Snap Lock, but the more modern RX Pearl shell gives it an even quicker response to friction. While a ball like the Storm Virtual Energy Blackout is also an asymmetric pearl, the RAD-X core makes the Lock-On feel somewhat "heavier" and more stable in its rotation, which gives it more control through the midlane. Compared to a Storm Summit Peak (symmetric pearl), the Lock-On's asymmetry produces a markedly more defined and sharper change of direction when it leaves the oil.
On the Lanes
The Storm Lock-On is an excellent choice for medium to heavy oil patterns where you need length through the heads but don't want to give up the power of a large asymmetric core. It works perfectly as a "transition ball" when the lane starts to break down and dull solids lose energy too early. If you like to play deep angles and send the ball well out to the right (for right-handers), you'll love the strong snap at the end of the lane. The Power Edge finish lets it ignore burned-up heads with ease, while the high differential makes it grab reliably in the dry. It is less suited to very oily heads without a defined backend, or to extremely dry lanes, where it could get too jumpy.
