BOWLING BALL INFOS

First Impressions
Released in August 2023, the Radical Katana Strike expands the well-known Katana series with an aggressive hybrid variant. Visually, the ball shows up in a striking color combination of black, orange and smoke, which makes it easy to see out on the lane. The technological heart of the ball is the combination of the proven "Katana Assault Asymmetric" core and the innovative HK22 (HyperKinetic22) hybrid cover. With a 2.501 RG and a 0.051 differential (at 15 lbs), the core has a high flare potential characteristic. Unlike many of its predecessors in the series, the Katana Strike does not come polished from the factory, but with a 500/1500/3000 Siaair Micro Pad finish. This matte surface prep signals before the first shot that this ball was designed for earlier traction and a more stable roll phase in the heads, without completely giving up the responsiveness at the breakpoint that is typical of HK22 technology.
Comparison
The most obvious point of reference is its direct predecessor, the Katana Assault from Radical. While the Assault is known for extreme length and a very angular motion thanks to its pearl cover and polish, the Katana Strike should read the midlane considerably earlier. With the hybrid blend and the 3000 grit finish, the overall motion should look rounder and more controllable than on the straight pearl model, while generating more total hook. The HK22 base, however, means the ball should still respond faster to friction than classic "dull" (matte) asymmetric balls. Compared to other balls on the market, it lands in a similar performance window as the Black Widow 2.0 Hybrid from Hammer, though the Katana Strike, with its asymmetric core and high intermediate differential (0.020), aims for a very defined change of the rotational axis. It works harder in oil than pure skid/flip balls, but retains more energy for the backend than solid balls with very rough surfaces.
On the Lanes
The Radical Katana Strike positions itself primarily as a ball for medium to heavy oil volumes. Because of the tacky surface, it needs enough oil in the heads so it doesn't burn up energy too early. It works very well as the first ball out of the bag on fresh lane conditions, since the hybrid coverstock provides some margin for error: it should build enough traction in the oil not to slide through, but won't react as violently off the dry outside boards as a pure pearl ball would. If you throw the ball fast, this ball could give you the help you need to get the hook started earlier. If you play at lower speed, use it mainly on oily lanes, since otherwise it could roll out too early once the transition sets in and lose carry. The ball aims to find the pocket reliably even from deeper lines and to show strong continuation through the pins, provided there is still enough rotational energy left at the pin deck.

Preis / Leistung (3 out of 5)
