- Katana Shiranui

First Impressions
The Radical Katana Shiranui is an exotic sight on the market, since it was originally an exclusive "overseas release" for the Japanese market (April 2019) that only reached Western hands through import channels. The name "Shiranui" refers to a mystical ghost-light phenomenon, which is fittingly underscored by the dark Black/Silver/Grey Marble look. Technically, Radical combines the proven Katana Asymmetric core (2.503 RG, 0.050 diff, 0.020 int. diff) with the UR-Hybrid (Ultra Responsive) coverstock here. Unlike many other Katana models, which are often highly polished, the Shiranui comes out of the box with a 500/4000 Siaair finish. This matte prep takes the extreme shine off the ball and points to more controlled traction in the midlane without completely taming the aggressive nature of the core.
Comparison
Within the Katana line, the Shiranui serves as the link between the original Radical Katana (pearl, polished) and the Radical Katana Dragon (solid, rough). While the original Katana is known for its extreme skid-flip character and reacts only very late, the Shiranui reads the boards noticeably earlier thanks to the 4000 finish and the hybrid cover. It is less jumpy at the breakpoint, but still offers more angle than the Katana Dragon, which was built primarily for heavy oil and an early arc. Drawing a comparison to a Storm AstroPhysix, the Shiranui shows more stability in oil due to its matte surface and doesn't react quite as sensitively with over-reactions on wet/dry conditions ("over/under"). It behaves similarly to a DV8 Warrant, but the Katana core gives it a bit more dynamic backend.
On the Lanes
The Radical Katana Shiranui is ideally suited to medium to heavy oil conditions. Thanks to the hybrid cover and the 4000 grit, it is an excellent choice when pure pearl balls slide too far ("blow-out") but strong solids already lose energy too early. It shines during the transition phase, once the oil in the heads has broken down a bit. The ball generates enough friction to read the midlane consistently, yet retains the typical "Katana kick" into the pocket thanks to the asymmetric core. It lets you play deeper lines without having to worry about the ball swimming in the oil. For extremely dry lanes, however, it is too strong and would start working too early.
