First Impressions
Released in August 2023, the Brunswick Johnny Petraglia BVL 2023 continues a long tradition of charity balls, but does so with absolute high-performance technology. Visually, the ball impresses with a rich Deep Purple that gives it a classy, classic look. Under the hood works the legendary Melee Low RG core, known for early rotation and high continuity with a 2.487 RG and a 0.050 differential (at 15 lbs). The coverstock is the modern HK22 Pearl reactive blend. Out of the box the ball comes with a 500/1000/1500 Siaair sand and is then polished with Crown Factory Compound. This combination promises a very clean run through the heads while still reacting strongly to friction at the end of the oil pattern.
Comparison
Technically, the Johnny Petraglia BVL 2023 is a direct relative of the popular Melee Jab series. Compared to the Brunswick Melee Jab Carbon, which uses the same core, the BVL 2023 goes a bit longer thanks to the HK22 Pearl cover and responds more quickly to dry boards in the backend. It offers more skid through the front part of the lane, but retains the typical round, predictable motion of the Melee core. Bring a Storm Phaze V into the comparison and the BVL 2023 often seems to roll a little earlier and looks less whippy at the breakpoint, which gives it a more controlled character. Against a Roto Grip Hustle, the BVL is clearly stronger in overall hook and handles more oil volume, since the core has a considerably higher flare potential.
On the Lanes
This ball is an excellent choice for typical house shots and medium oil conditions. The polished HK22 surface gets it through the heads effortlessly, even when they are already a bit played in. Once the lane goes into transition and stronger solid balls lose energy too early or react too sluggishly, the Johnny Petraglia BVL shows its strengths. It generates enough length to stand further inside on the lane and still offers enough recovery to hit the pocket reliably. If you have lower ball speed, it is often strong enough to be the first ball out of the bag, while power players can use it perfectly when the lane "breaks down" and more angle is required.
