First Impressions
The Motiv Jackal Onyx positions itself as the new flagship of the popular Jackal series and makes a clear statement with its striking black design. Technically it is built on the proven asymmetric Predator V2 core with an RG of 2.47, a maximum differential of 0.054 and an intermediate differential of 0.015 (in 15 pounds). The real innovation, however, lies in the Leverage HXC Solid coverstock, a further development of the Leverage MXC technology used on the Subzero Forge, upgraded with more traction and hook potential. Out of the box the ball comes with a 1000-grit LSS (Laser Scan Sanded) surface and incorporates the new Duramax technology, which provides longer-lasting surface characteristics and consistent performance. A notable feature is the exceptional oil absorption, which allows the ball to navigate oil-heavy lanes effortlessly without losing backend power. The combination of an early roll, massive flare potential of over 7 inches and a continuous motion through the pins makes the Jackal Onyx an exceptionally strong offering for heavy oil conditions.

Comparison
Compared directly with other members of the Jackal family, the Onyx shows clear differences. While the Jackal Ghost runs cleaner through the heads and offers more length, the Onyx reads the lane earlier and provides more control in heavy oil. The Crimson Jackal, as the pearl version, shows a noticeably sharper change of direction and is better suited to medium to light oil conditions where more length is needed. Against the Subzero Forge, which is also designed for heavy oil conditions, the Jackal Onyx shows a similarly strong read in the heads, but offers a rounder, more continuous motion on the backend. Compared to the Physics Blackout, the Onyx reacts to the lane considerably earlier and shows a controlled, powerful rolling motion instead of a sharp angle. One outstanding feature compared to other asymmetric solid balls is the ability of the Onyx to still provide a controlled transition into the hook phase despite its strength in oil. It does not burn up its energy prematurely and keeps enough in reserve for powerful pin action.

On the Lanes
The Jackal Onyx is primarily designed for heavy oil conditions and reaches its full potential on fresh, high-volume lanes and sport patterns with higher oil volume. On typical house patterns with a 7:1 or 8:1 ratio, in its factory surface it often requires a position far left with correspondingly large angles to the pocket. For regular league use, an adjustment to 3000-4000 grit is often recommended to ensure more versatility. If you are speed-dominant, the Jackal Onyx offers the necessary traction in oil with enough motion on the backend for good pin action. Balanced players will find it a perfect option for the highest oil volumes, for breaking down patterns and for controlling wet/dry transitions. If you are rev-dominant, you'll benefit especially on long, flat and oil-heavy environments from the control the ball provides. One special aspect is the Duramax technology, which not only keeps the surface consistent longer but also lets the oil shed cleanly off the ball – a practical advantage during play. The effective oil absorption allows the ball to keep performing consistently in later games without showing a significant drop-off. The Jackal Onyx is therefore not only a specialized tool for heavy oil conditions, but also, with surface adjustments, a versatile companion for various lane conditions that retains its performance characteristics even after numerous shots.
