First Impressions
The Motiv Iron Forge shows up in a striking silver/gray/red pearl finish and is considered the strongest pearl symmetric Motiv has ever produced. Inside works the proven Detonator core with a 2.47 RG and a 0.055 differential. This combination of low RG and high differential delivers strong overall hook performance with improved midlane traction and control. Wrapped around the powerful core is the Infusion MVP Pearl coverstock, the cleanest and most angular cover Motiv has ever developed. The surface is polished to 5000 grit LSP and promises clean length development with an explosive backend reaction.
Comparison
Compared to its sister model, the Motiv Ripcord Velocity, the Iron Forge shows a noticeably stronger reaction and reads the lane earlier, while the Velocity transitions later. The 900 Global Zen and the Storm Trident Horizon are frequently named as possible competitors, with the Horizon reacting earlier and rounder. The Iron Forge should slot in between Mid Control and Mid Defined, and for bowlers who use the Motiv Pride or the Brunswick Venom Shock in their Mid Control slot, it could function as a Mid Control Plus. According to the manufacturer, its angularity exceeds that of every other ball in the current Motiv lineup.
On the Lanes
The Iron Forge shows its strengths primarily on medium to heavy oil conditions. If you're rev-dominant, you benefit from being able to use a pearl cover on fresh oil, which is extremely rare among symmetrical balls. If you're speed-dominant, you get the chance for the first time to use a pearl cover where normally only solids or hybrids would provide enough traction. That should be especially advantageous during transition phases, since the ball performs at its best on fresh medium oil patterns and through the transition. Versatility increases with surface adjustments — taken down to 2000 grit, the ball starts reading three feet earlier without losing its backend motion. That said, the Iron Forge is considerably less suited to lightly oiled conditions, where it can react unpredictably.
