First Impressions
Released in November 2018, the Ebonite Impact successfully combines proven technology with modern chemistry. Inside sits the asymmetric CB-2 core that fans still know from the Pivot series. This core features a very low 2.48 RG and a strong 0.049 differential (at 15 lbs), which produces an early revving up and a strong directional change. This "machine" is wrapped in the GSV-1 Hybrid Reactive coverstock, a further development of the popular Game-Breaker technology that was also used on the Ebonite Choice. From the factory, the ball comes in an eye-catching Lime/Blue/Silver color scheme with a 500/1000 Abralon finish and Powerhouse Factory Finish Polish. This combination of a coarse base surface and polish suggests length, but the strong core makes sure the Impact reads the midlane noticeably earlier than typical "shiny balls."
Comparison
Within the Ebonite lineup, the Impact positions itself as the perfect complement to the massive Ebonite Choice (solid). While the Choice digs in early in heavy oil and creates a rounder motion, the Impact's hybrid cover and polish give it considerably more length through the heads, but it reacts more aggressively and with more angle at the end of the oil pattern. Among competitors, it strongly recalls the Storm Intense Fire: both balls use asymmetric cores and hybrid covers to bridge the gap between "traction" and "backend." The Impact, however, is often somewhat more controllable at the breakpoint than extremely snappy pearl asymmetrics, since the CB-2 core stabilizes the rotation early. It is not a pure "skid-snap" ball, but offers a confidence-inspiring mix of midlane readability and backend kick.
On the Lanes
The Ebonite Impact is a weapon for medium to heavier oil patterns where you have to generate angle. It shines in the situation when pure solid balls start to burn up energy too early (rolling out) and leave corner pins. Thanks to the GSV-1 hybrid cover, you can move deeper into the oily parts of the lane with the Impact and trust that it will build enough traction to claw its way back, without breaking off immediately. It is ideal for tournament players as a "transition ball": as soon as the heads dry up, the Impact lets you keep moving left and open up the pocket, while the polished finish stores enough energy for an explosive hit into the pins.
