First Impressions
The Visionary Immortal Pearl, released in January 2005, is a bowling ball that stands out for its unique technological approach to core design. The cover of this model is made from the reactive Immortal Pearl material, developed by Visionary Bowling Products specifically for this series. Out of the box, the surface comes with a 1500 polish. This smooth finish should allow the ball to travel through the heads with very little resistance and save valuable energy for the back part of the lane. The real heart of the Visionary Immortal Pearl, however, is the asymmetric Immortal AMB core. AMB here stands for Anti-Mass Bias. Conventional asymmetric cores often use very dense, heavy materials at a specific location to create the desired imbalance. Visionary took the opposite approach and built in an extremely light cap on the side exactly opposite the mass bias. This negative mass bias in turn creates a strong positive effect on the target side. Looking at the raw numbers for a 15-pound ball, the extremely high 0.078 differential jumps out immediately. Combined with a moderate 2.510 RG, this spec points to a downright massive flare potential that makes the ball work extremely hard as soon as it leaves the oil.
Comparison
Bringing in a reference ball like the Storm Phaze II makes the characteristic traits of the Visionary Immortal Pearl considerably easier to place. The Storm Phaze II uses a solid cover with a matte finish, aiming for early traction and a very smooth, rounded motion down the full length of the lane. The Visionary Immortal Pearl behaves fundamentally differently here. Thanks to the polished surface, it glides through the first boards far more easily and conserves its energy. But once the ball reaches the drier part of the lane and hits friction, the enormously strong core takes control. The extremely high 0.078 differential forces the ball into extremely large flare, which means a fresh, oil-free contact surface meets the lane on nearly every revolution. The result is a very sharp, strong arc at the breakpoint that is noticeably more angular and pronounced than the gentle curve of the Storm Phaze II. Comparing the Visionary Immortal Pearl to a classic pearl ball from its own era, such as the Brunswick Inferno Pearl, shows the specific advantage of the AMB technology. Where normal pearl covers sometimes tend to miss the breakpoint in too much oil, the asymmetric core of the Immortal Pearl provides a very defined hook phase and a dependable move toward the pins.
On the Lanes
On the lanes, the Visionary Immortal Pearl shows its full potential above all on medium to lightly oily conditions, but with a mechanical surface adjustment it can also be used on somewhat heavier patterns. Its ideal scenario is often once the lanes have been played on for a while and the transition begins to noticeably change the oil distribution. When the front boards lose oil, the pearl cover helps you keep reaching the pocket reliably without the ball losing energy too early. At the same time, the asymmetric AMB core makes sure the ball doesn't slide past the breakpoint but instead develops a strong, decisive hook. This ball should especially help bowlers who naturally struggle to generate strong rotation out of the wrist. The immense core dynamics force the ball into a stable roll phase early, which should maximize carry on a solid hit in the pocket. Another big advantage of this particular core design lies in the wide range of drilling options. Because the mass bias is not created by a compact, heavy block that could be partially removed when drilling the thumb hole, the core's dynamics remain almost fully intact with nearly any layout. If you throw the ball very slowly, though, use this one with care. The combination of extremely high differential and strong asymmetry can, at low speed, cause the ball to spend all of its energy too quickly before it reaches the pins.
