First Impressions
The Roto Grip IDOL was released in March 2018 and within a very short time became one of the most defining balls in the manufacturer's HP3 line. Visually, the ball immediately stands out with its bold, monochrome magenta coloring. Technically, this model marks the debut of the Ikon Core, a symmetrical core developed specifically for an extremely strong midlane presence. On a 15-pound ball, the specs come in at a low RG of 2.49 and a high differential of 0.052. This core is wrapped in the MicroTrax-S18 Solid Reactive coverstock, a highly developed nanotechnology shell. The surface comes out of the box with a dull 2000 grit pad finish. This combination of a fast-revving core and an aggressive cover should deliver maximum traction on oily lanes while at the same time ensuring a controlled, powerful continuation through the pins.
Comparison Compared to the Storm Phaze II, which is often named as a direct competitor among symmetrical benchmark solids, the Roto Grip IDOL shows a clearly earlier and rounder overall motion. While the Storm Phaze II tends to generate a bit more length and make a more angular direction change at the breakpoint, the IDOL reads the lane very intensely as early as the midlane and offers an extremely even arc shape. Compared to the Roto Grip Haywire, the IDOL offers more total hook and a higher responsiveness to friction thanks to the MicroTrax technology. Compared to the Roto Grip Dare Devil Trick, the IDOL provides a stronger midlane read and noticeably better carry at higher oil volumes. Against weaker models such as the Roto Grip Winner, the IDOL offers massively increased stability and board coverage, which makes it a considerably more aggressive option for demanding conditions. These comparisons underline its role as a powerful benchmark ball, valued for its reliability and controllability.
On the Lanes The ideal conditions for the Roto Grip IDOL are medium to heavy oil volumes. Thanks to the dull 2000 grit finish and the nanotechnology in the cover, the ball finds traction immediately even on fresh oil patterns and gives you excellent control across the entire lane. It is the classic choice to start a tournament day, since it reflects the lane conditions honestly and avoids unpredictable jumps at the breakpoint. If you throw the ball fast, you'll benefit especially from the IDOL's early traction, which keeps it from sliding through the oil. For rev-dominant players, the ball is an excellent option for controlling the heads and playing a controlled line through the middle of the lane. Once the lanes dry up more and transition sets in, however, the IDOL's aggressiveness can cause it to burn up too much energy too early, which can lead to flat hits. In that case, a ball change to a model with a pearl cover is advisable. All in all, the Roto Grip IDOL is an indispensable powerhouse for bowlers looking for a stable lane read and maximum hitting power on oily conditions.
