First Impressions
The Roto Grip IDOL Synergy comes in an attractive color combination of Amethyst Pearl and Magenta Solid that visually seems to unite the two predecessor models, the IDOL and the IDOL Pearl. As the hybrid version of the successful IDOL series, it pairs the proven Ikon Core with the eTrax Hybrid Reactive coverstock. The specs for a 15-pound ball show a 2.49 RG and a 0.052 differential, while the surface ships at 1500-grit polished. The symmetric Ikon Core with its low RG and high differential should deliver the characteristic ball motion that has made the IDOL family so successful.
Comparison
In practice, the IDOL Synergy positions itself perfectly between the original IDOL and the IDOL Pearl. Compared to the IDOL Pearl, it offers better traction in oil and a stronger backend hook, while it runs cleaner through the heads than the original IDOL, but with a more forceful backend motion. Estimates put it about three boards stronger than both the IDOL Pearl and the Storm Trend. Some bowlers see similarities to the IDOL Pro, though the Pro has more of a solid surface while the Synergy shows pearl characteristics. Its character is closer to the IDOL Pearl in terms of length, but with a smoother and more continuous reaction to friction.
On the Lanes
The IDOL Synergy is most effective on medium oil volume, but it also works well on heavier volumes and longer oil patterns. It is particularly suited as a hybrid option when solid balls react too strongly but pearl balls don't grab early enough. Many bowlers describe it as a benchmark ball with extra backend hook, perfect for medium-heavy to medium-dry lane conditions. On fresh lanes it lets you play farther right and still get to the pocket reliably. Through transition it has no trouble chasing the oil left, thanks to the strong backend motion. Its impressive versatility makes it a do-it-all ball for decent length and control, which Kyle Troup demonstrated at the 2021 PBA Players Championship.
