First Impressions
The Roto Grip IDOL Helios comes in a bright, radiant orange and uses the proven Ikon Core technology combined with the new XtremeTrax Solid Reactive coverstock. With a 2.49 RG and a 0.052 differential in 15 pounds, the ball shows low RG characteristics paired with a higher differential. The surface comes out of the box with a 2000 grit Abralon finish. Thanks to chemically charged nano particles, the XtremeTrax technology should offer the highest responsiveness to friction that Roto Grip has ever seen from a nano particle material.
Comparison
Compared to the original IDOL, the Helios is a ball that gets down the lane a bit easier and makes a stronger backend move, while it reacts early and gradually like the original, though not quite as early and slow. Next to the original IDOL, the Helios starts up slightly earlier and offers more backend reaction, with roughly 2 to 3 boards more total hook. Its overall strength is rated similar to the original Idol, the Storm Zen Master and the Storm Phaze II. In terms of placement, the Helios is described as smoother and somewhat weaker than the original Roto Grip Rubicon Solid.
On the Lanes
The Helios should be a great match on medium to heavy oil patterns. This ball is rated as essential for tournament players, since it is very strong and predictable on flatter patterns. With its 2.49 RG and 0.052 differential, it works as a benchmark ball that can be used on multiple patterns. Its continuous character makes it especially valuable if you play with lower speed and more rev rate than would be ideal for that speed. The slow response characteristic keeps variations in speed and release from showing up so dramatically in the ball motion and allows straighter angles. The Helios should find a place in every arsenal; only if you prefer a ball that goes long and makes a quick, strong move, or if you are speed-dominant, might you not like it.
