First Impressions
The Storm Ice Storm in the Blue White version was released in November 2016 as a classic member of the polyester series. It comes with a high-gloss polished surface, finished at the factory with a 3500-grit polish. Underneath the visually appealing cover works a symmetrical Traditional 3-Piece Core. The technical specifications for a 15-pound ball list a radius of gyration of 2.69 as well as a very low differential of 0.006. This combination of an extremely hard polyester shell and a stabilizing core produces an absolutely straight ball motion with minimal flare potential. The material is designed for maximum durability and, thanks to its hardness, should generate extremely little friction on the lane surface.
Comparison Compared directly to other balls in this category, such as the Brunswick TZone or the Columbia 300 White Dot, the Storm Ice Storm offers a shade more stability in its roll thanks to its three-piece core. While simple pancake cores from some manufacturers can tend to wobble uncontrollably, the Storm Ice Storm stays very directionally stable due to its core design. Against performance-oriented urethane balls like the Storm Pitch Black, the Ice Storm shows a considerably weaker response to friction. Where a urethane ball still develops a gentle arc through the transition, the Ice Storm holds its line almost unaffected. Even compared to entry-level balls with a reactive shell, such as the Storm Tropical Surge, this ball behaves far more passively and forgives drier sections of the lane without hooking early.
On the Lanes The primary job of the Storm Ice Storm is shooting spares. It is the ideal tool for every player type to attack corner pins like the 7 or 10 pin with confidence, since it almost completely ignores the existing oil pattern. Because of the low friction, the ball glides effortlessly through the heads and saves its energy for a direct hit in the target area, which optimizes carry on single pins. For beginners it also serves as an excellent ball for learning basic technique, since it doesn't make any unpredictable hooking moves. On extremely dry lanes (burned lanes) it can even be used as a strike ball if you have a high rev rate, allowing you to reach the pocket in a controlled way when reactive balls already react too early. In everyday use it minimizes the risk of missed shots on difficult lane conditions, since the transition of the oil has no significant influence on its path.
