First Impressions
Released in May 2022 as an international (overseas) release, the Roto Grip Hyper Attention expands the popular Attention series with a heavy-duty solid variant. Visually the ball comes in a striking combination of "Radiant Orange / Baby Blue / Navy," with the factory 2000-grit Abralon finish giving the surface a dull, textured look. Inside spins the proven asymmetric Momentous core, which also forms the heart of the series. With a 2.50 RG and a high differential of 0.053 (at 15 lbs), this core provides quick revving and strong flare. The special feature is the Hyper X Solid Reactive coverstock (based on the Aggression NE formula). This chemical makeup is aggressively built for traction and signals right away: this ball wants to dig, not skid.
Comparison
The Hyper Attention positions itself as the direct, aggressive counterpart to the Roto Grip Attention Black Pearl. While the Black Pearl (polished) stands for length and a sharp reaction at the end of the pattern, the Hyper Attention reads the lane much earlier. It works like a snowplow through the oil. Compared to the Roto Grip Gem, the Hyper Attention comes through the heads marginally cleaner, since the Momentous core doesn't rev up quite as extremely early as the Gem's Defiant LRG core, but it still offers comparable overall hook strength on heavy oil. Against a 900 Global Reality it shows similar traction, but its motion often feels a bit quicker in rotation (revving up) and it transfers energy into the pins a little more smoothly.
On the Lanes
The Roto Grip Hyper Attention is a pure heavy oil weapon and made for long, fresh sport patterns. It absolutely needs plenty of oil in the front part of the lane (heads) to conserve its energy. It's the ideal choice as a first ball out of the bag (a "benchmark" for heavy oil) to control the pocket and read the pattern. The rough surface keeps the ball from the typical skidding at the breakpoint and gives you security at high speed. Once the transition sets in and the heads dry up, however, the ball will roll out too early and lose carry. At that point a move to a shiny ball like the Attention Black Pearl or a hybrid is advisable.
