First Impressions
Released in October 2018, the Storm Hy-Road X celebrates the tenth anniversary of one of the most successful ball lines of all time. It stays true to the winning formula and uses the legendary Inverted Fe² Technology core. This symmetrical core is defined by a very high 2.57 RG and a medium to high 0.046 differential (at 15 lbs), which helps it generate length effortlessly and store energy. The new element is the cover: Storm uses the R2X Solid Reactive formulation here, which is chemically more aggressive than the R2S shell of the original. Despite the "Solid" designation, the deep black ball comes out of the box with a factory finish of 1500 grit polished. This combination of grabbier base chemistry and smooth surface aims to retain the proven Hy-Road length while slightly increasing the response to friction and the stability in oil.
Comparison
The inevitable comparison is to the original Storm Hy-Road (Hybrid). Thanks to the R2X shell, the Hy-Road X reads the lane a tick earlier and feels a bit fuller through the midlane than the original, which reacts more sensitively to dry spots. Where the classic Hy-Road often makes a very late, whip-like move, the X offers a somewhat more controlled but still angular reaction that covers more boards overall. Compared to a pure benchmark solid such as the Storm Phaze II, the difference is massive: the Phaze II rolls much earlier and rounder, while the Hy-Road X skids through the heads and does its work well downlane. It is the logical bridge for bowlers who find the original Hy-Road too slippery in oil but who aren't ready to reach for a dull ball yet.
On the Lanes
The Storm Hy-Road X is a master on medium oil patterns and shines especially when the lanes begin to transition. When the heads start to break down and rougher balls lose energy too early, the X plays to its strengths: the high RG gets the ball cleanly through the front part of the lane, while the R2X shell provides enough traction at the breakpoint not to slide even with carrydown. It is ideal for opening up the pocket and playing deeper angles. Thanks to the combination of solid chemistry and polish, it reacts less touchily to over/under conditions than many pure pearl balls. It offers excellent carry because it saves a lot of energy for the pins, and it's an asset in almost any bowler's arsenal as soon as the freshest layer of oil is gone.
