First Impressions
The Storm Hy-Road SE (Special Edition) was released in November 2017 as an exclusive variant of what is arguably the most legendary bowling ball of all time. Visually, this edition sets itself apart with an elegant combination of black and platinum silver, paired with the classic Berry Lick fragrance. Technically, Storm stays true to the winning formula and uses the symmetrical Inverted Fe2 Technology core. This core is known for being built without a massive inner weight block, which allows for a thicker outer shell and should thus increase hitting power on the pins. On a 15-pound ball, the numbers come in at a 2.57 RG and a 0.046 differential. The coverstock is the R2S Solid Reactive surface, finished at the factory with a 1500-grit polish. These specifications promise the typical Hy-Road length with a controlled reaction.
Comparison Compared to the original Storm Hy-Road with its hybrid cover, the Hy-Road SE offers a somewhat smoother and more predictable motion thanks to its solid cover combined with the polished finish. While the hybrid Hy-Road is often known for its pronounced angle off the backend, the SE solid looks a bit rounder in its change of direction. Compared to the Storm Hy-Road Nano, released in the same period, the SE shows noticeably more skid through the heads. The Nano grabs the lane much earlier with its dull NRG shell, while the SE is designed to save energy for the breakpoint. Compared to the Storm IQ Tour Solid, the Hy-Road SE reads the lane considerably later due to the polished finish and the higher-RG core, and creates a more angular entry into the pocket, making it a less aggressive but more versatile option on medium conditions.
On the Lanes The Storm Hy-Road SE is conceived as the ultimate benchmark ball for medium to slightly dry oil conditions. It is meant to ensure that you can maintain a clean projection through the heads without the ball reacting to friction too early. Through the proven combination of core and R2S surface, the ball offers exceptional consistency and reliability, which makes it attractive to a wide range of player types. In practice, the ball is especially strong once the lanes begin to break down (transition) and aggressive high-performance balls start reacting too erratically. It allows for a controlled line to the breakpoint and offers above-average carry thanks to the thickness of the shell. For tournament players, the Hy-Road SE is the ideal tool for finding a stable baseline reaction when conditions feature neither extremely high oil volume nor extremely dry boards.
