First Impressions
The Storm Hy-Road Nano appeared in December 2017 as an aggressive extension of the legendary Hy-Road series. Visually, the ball comes in a plain combination of black and ultramarine blue, complemented by the distinctive scent of coconut cream. Technically, this model combines the proven symmetrical Inverted Fe2 Technology core with the highly traction-heavy NRG Solid Reactive coverstock. The core features a higher RG of 2.57, typical for this series, and a moderate differential of 0.046 (at 15 pounds). Thanks to the special core design, which does without a dense inner weight, the ball has a thicker outer shell, which should optimize energy transfer to the pins and minimize deflection. The surface ships from the factory with a 2000-grit Abralon finish, giving the ball a dull and very tacky appearance.
Comparison Within the Storm lineup, the Hy-Road Nano occupies a special position. Compared to the classic Storm Phaze II, which also uses a solid cover, the Hy-Road Nano offers a somewhat later reaction thanks to its Inverted Fe2 core. While the Storm Phaze II starts reading earlier in the midlane and shows a very strong, continuous motion, the higher RG value of the Hy-Road Nano provides more length through the heads. Compared to the Storm IQ Tour Solid, the Hy-Road Nano offers noticeably more overall hook and a sharper angle in the backend. The nanotechnology of the NRG shell creates substantially more friction in oil than the conventional Storm Hy-Road Solid, so the ball grabs considerably earlier and is less prone to sliding through longer oil patterns. It thus closes the gap between the pure benchmark balls and the extremely strong high-performance models for very high oil volume.
On the Lanes The Hy-Road Nano is designed as a versatile all-rounder that plays to its strengths above all on medium to heavier oil volumes. If you have a moderate rev rate, it provides the support needed to find a controlled pocket even on fresh lane conditions. The combination of a rather skid-friendly core and an aggressive surface keeps the ball from starving too early in the heads, while it stays stable through the transition phase. In practice, the ball shows a predictable, arcing motion that nevertheless saves more energy for impact than other solid balls. It is ideal as the first ball out of the bag to test the oil pattern, and it offers enough margin once the lanes start to break down.
