First Impressions
The Storm Hy-Road Black Pearl was released in February 2018 as an exclusive overseas model and is a stylish variant of the legendary Hy-Road series. Visually it sets itself apart with the deep black pearl look that gives it its name, lending it an aggressive yet elegant appearance. Technically the ball is built on the proven Inverted Fe² Technology, a symmetrical core that has been known for its versatility and hitting power for over a decade. In the 15-pound version, the core offers a 2.57 RG and a 0.046 differential. The coverstock is the legendary R2S Pearl Reactive material, finished at the factory with a 1500-grit polish. With its distinctive "Mulberry" scent, the Black Pearl continues the tradition of pairing high-end performance with a unique sensory experience.
Comparison Technically, the Hy-Road Black Pearl is nearly identical to the globally known Hy-Road Pearl (Blue/Silver). The main difference lies in the pigmentation of the cover, which for many bowlers results in a subjectively somewhat "more stable" reaction to friction. Compared to the original Hy-Road (Hybrid), the Black Pearl offers noticeably more length through the heads and a sharper direction change at the breakpoint, since it responds less to the oil in the middle of the lane. Compared to the Storm Phaze II, the Black Pearl runs considerably cleaner through the first few boards and stores its energy more effectively for the backend, while the Phaze II as a solid model reads the lane much earlier. Compared to the Roto Grip Hustle Ink, the Hy-Road Black Pearl offers noticeably more dynamics and more hitting power at the pins thanks to the Inverted Fe² Technology. Against the Hy-Road Nano, the Black Pearl provides less overall hook on heavy oil, but it is the superior choice once the lanes start to dry up and transition sets in.
On the Lanes The ideal application for the Storm Hy-Road Black Pearl is on medium to lighter oil conditions. It is the classic "transition ball" that comes into play when dull solid balls lose too much energy in the heads and hit "flat" at the pin deck. Thanks to the R2S Pearl cover, the ball glides effortlessly through burned-up heads and only unleashes its full angular strength once it reaches the friction at the end of the oil pattern. If you have a high rev rate, it is an excellent tool for opening up the lane and playing deeper angles. If your ball speed is moderate, you'll benefit from the polished surface, which keeps the ball from turning over too early. On very heavy oil or extremely long patterns, however, the Black Pearl is less effective, since the polished R2S cover does not find enough traction there. In the pocket, the proven core geometry delivers excellent pin action and minimizes deflection. All in all, the Hy-Road Black Pearl is a reliable "must-have" for bowlers looking for the timeless performance of a Hy-Road in an exclusive black design.
