First Impressions
The Storm Hy-Road 900, released in September 2017 as an exclusive international (Overseas) release, continues the success story of the legendary Thunder line. Visually, the ball comes in a bright "Ruby / Orange" pearl color scheme that sets it apart from its siblings immediately. Inside works the iconic Inverted Fe2 Technology Core, which allows for a thicker shell by omitting an inner filler material and thereby maximizes energy transfer to the pins (coefficient of restitution). With a 2.57 RG and a 0.046 differential (at 15 lbs), this symmetrical core provides high inertia for length and a stable backend. The core is wrapped in the proven R2S Pearl Reactive coverstock. The factory finish of 1500-grit polish creates a mirror-smooth surface designed to glide effortlessly through the heads and save the rotation for the last third.
Comparison
Technically, the Hy-Road 900 is a direct relative of the Storm Hy-Road Pearl (blue/purple). Both share the core and the R2S Pearl cover. In a direct comparison, the Hy-Road 900 therefore behaves very similarly: it shows the length that is characteristic of the series and a sharp but controllable change of direction at the breakpoint. Compared to the original Storm Hy-Road (hybrid), the 900 gets through the heads noticeably cleaner and reacts later, but with more angle off the dry boards. Compared to a Roto Grip Dare Devil, the Hy-Road 900 often offers a somewhat rounder backend motion and feels less twitchy when it comes to over/under reactions. Unlike balls with stronger coverstocks such as the Storm Phaze II, the Hy-Road 900 ignores the oil in the heads completely and serves as a perfect step-down once the lane breaks down.
On the Lanes
The Storm Hy-Road 900 is an excellent choice for medium to lighter oil conditions and shows its strengths especially during the transition phase. When stronger balls start hooking too early or losing energy, this ball lets you hold your line or move slightly inside without losing entry angle. Thanks to the high RG value and the polished pearl surface, it glides across played-in heads and uses the friction in the backend for a powerful hit. It works very well for tournament players as a "late block" option, and for league bowlers on typical house shots who are looking for a ball that generates length while still having the typical Hy-Road punch in the pins. It is less suited to fresh, long oil, where it could slide too far.
