First Impressions
The 900 Global Honey Badger Extreme Solid comes in a striking Purple/Black/Blue color combination and was released in December 2019. The ball uses the Grapnel Asymmetric core wrapped in the S74R Solid coverstock. The specs list a 2.54 RG, a 0.053 differential and a 0.011 mass bias for 15-pound balls, while 14-pound versions come in at a 2.56 RG, 0.050 differential and 0.011 mass bias. The factory surface is 2000 Abralon. One special feature is the 3-piece Grapnel Asymmetric core design, which adds a filler material between the weight block and the coverstock. This construction should give bowlers using 14- and 15-pound equipment a drastically increased ball reaction.
Comparison
Compared to the popular Honey Badger line, the Extreme Solid is noticeably more aggressive. The S74R coverstock provides more traction in oil than the S71 cover used on the other Honey Badger releases, a cover already made famous by the 900 Global Inception and Truth. With the revised core design and a cover that responds more quickly to dry, it allows more open angles compared to the Honey Badger Claw and Money Badger Tour. The lower RG and higher differential construction makes the ball come alive earlier than the Honey Badger and Money Badger and provides more control. Against its pearl counterpart, the solid version delivers less length, a weaker move off the dry and more overall hook.
On the Lanes
The Honey Badger Extreme Solid suits medium to heavy oil conditions. Testing showed it to be most effective on heavy oil patterns, with power players and tweeners getting a slightly better reaction than strokers on fresh conditions. The ball motion is characterized as very even and smooth, with an earlier read and a gentle backend move. The aggressive surface with its 2000 finish makes it read in the midlane when it reaches the buffed area. The traits smooth, arcing, control and predictable make it particularly interesting. It shows its strengths on sport patterns of medium length and medium volume. The S74R Solid Reactive coverstock with 2000 grit finish bites into the lane and provides traction on a wide range of conditions.
