First Impressions
The DV8 Hater makes a striking visual statement on the lanes, with the Cherry, Red and Blue color combination catching the eye immediately and underscoring the ball's aggressive nature. From a technical standpoint, this ball marks a significant step forward in the DV8 lineup, combining the newly developed Hater core with the advanced HK22 technology. Inside works the asymmetric Hater core, which at 15 lbs shows an RG of 2.539, a differential of 0.054 and an intermediate differential of 0.024. On paper alone, these numbers point to enormous potential for flare and direction change. This powerful engine is wrapped in the HK22 - Havoc Hybrid coverstock. According to the manufacturer, this is the most aggressive version of the HyperKinetic22 technology to date, chemically altered to generate even more traction in oil. The ball ships with a rough finish from 500 and 1500 Siaair Micro Pads. This coarse texture is not only noticeable to the touch, it is a clear statement about the intended purpose: the Hater is designed to read early and dig into the pocket. In addition, the ball features Durability Optimization Technology (DOT), which allows more freedom in layout placement and should increase durability, as well as DynamiCore for optimized energy transfer to the pins.
Comparison
Placed side by side with other balls on the market, the DV8 Hater clearly sits in the "hook monster" segment for heavy oil. Compared to the Hellcat XLR8 from DV8's own lineup, both share a preference for plenty of oil, but the Hater shows a noticeably more defined move in the back part of the lane. While the Hellcat XLR8 is known for an extremely early and rounded motion, the Hater generates more angle in the backend through the HK22 base and the hybrid additive, without sacrificing the necessary traction in the heads. An interesting comparison can also be drawn to the Black Widow 3.0 from Hammer. Both balls use asymmetric cores and strong surfaces, but the Hater tends to react more quickly to friction once it exits the pattern, while the Black Widow 3.0 is often described as somewhat more controlled and rounder through the arc. Against balls like the Absolute Power from Storm, the Hater should produce more total hook overall thanks to the Havoc surface and dig through the oil more strongly. It fills the gap for bowlers who find a typical solid ball rolls up too early and loses energy, but who still don't want to give up the safe feel of a matte surface. It is more aggressive than many benchmark balls and should be the first option out of the bag when the lanes are fresh and heavily oiled.
On the Lanes
The ideal scenario for the DV8 Hater is without a doubt lanes with high oil volume, whether that's a fresh house shot or demanding sport patterns. Because of the matte 1500 surface, the ball needs enough oil in the front part of the lane (the heads) so it doesn't burn up energy too early. You'll notice that the ball has an exceptional ability to dig through the oil and still make an explosive move at the breakpoint. If you have a lower rev rate or higher speed, this ball could be the missing puzzle piece to finally generate the hook you want without drastically changing your technique. High rev players (crankers or two-handers) can use the Hater to play deeper lines and use the full width of the lane, since the ball is strong enough to recover reliably back to the pocket even from way inside. Once the transition sets in and the heads dry up, however, the Hater may start losing too much energy in the first few feet, which would show up as flatter carry. At that point, switching to a shinier ball like the Hater Pearl or the Trouble Maker from DV8 would be advisable. In summary, the Hater is a heavy oil specialist that offers security and aggressiveness where weaker balls would start to slide.
